3 essential knitwear items to cosy up with this winter

The jersey hasn't always been considered a quintessential sartorial item worthy of making a statement. If anything, it's been associated with the frumpy tag or has only been considered useful for practical layering purposes.

Yes, the cardigan in all its variations had a moment circa 2009/2010 - we slung them over our shoulders like preppy housewives, we added waterfall cardigans to our collection like yogis, and by 2014, we were thrifting oversized "ugly jerseys" at the advent of the dad chic trend.

Now, aside from merely trying to keep warm, jerseys are now a street style staple. And the go-to styling for today's knits appears to be that of half tucking them into midi skirts.

I guess what makes this pairing so effective is the fact that nothing gives a look more visual depth than contrasting textures - the wool and satin combo is pretty much the friendlier, more approachable cousin of leather and lace.

Crew neck sweater

This one is great for both office and street wear. For the office, you can tuck it into formal trousers or a pencil skirt. And for a casual day out, pair it with mom jeans or a pretty skirt (as mentioned above).

Pro tip: Crew neck sweaters also make for great monochrome looks.
