- Every love affair begins with some form of chemistry. It may not be love at first sight, but when Cupid's arrow strikes, there's a spark that grows with time spent together, familiarity and the approval of loved ones.
- That's how my love for Crocs started. It wasn't the stuff of fairytales. Instead, my appreciation for this shoe brand was gradual and hesitant.
- Here's how I became a fan of the Crocs brand and what other women think of the brand.
As I learnt more about the Crocs brand and heard good reviews from friends, my interest was piqued, and soon enough, I found myself with my first pair of Crocs. But they had to be black and inconspicuous because I was still reluctant and didn't know if I'd know how to pair them with my regular clothes, which are primarily semi-formal.
But now, many pairs and years later, I can shamelessly say Crocs are my go-to shoe - and that's a big deal for someone who prefers heels, so much so that I don't own any pumps or brogues.

But unlike most conventional relationships, mine with my Crocs isn't monogamous.
Let me explain: I'm a size 6, while most of my family members and nieces are sizes 5, 6 and 7, so they can basically wear my Crocs comfortably (or so they say) – which means on more occasions than not, they do just that. What's more, my brother regularly crosses the line when he wears them on his hands when he does push-ups in the mornings - it's got something to do with how well they grip on the tiled floor.
Needless to say, it's all much to my disapproval, but it doesn't deter the surrogate wearers. So what we have is more a situationship, really.
It's the comfort, ease of wearing, and the fact that you can clean them in seconds that makes them so appealing. However, with the new tie-dye line, I'm no longer too worried about this pair also becoming "the shoe for the nation" (I'm exaggerating, but that's how it feels) because this line is significantly individualised.

"The Tie-Dye Collection is a direct result of the 'Come As You Are' brand ethos, and we encourage individuals from around the country (and the world) to express their personal style with our new collection!" says Ally Petersen, Crocs SA Marketing Manager.
In addition, if you like a little height, there's the Bae version which is the Classic Clog reimagined with an "extra dose of height, attitude, and style."
The brand says, "when you're feeling a little extra, flaunt this range fearlessly."
This is exactly how the tie-dye range makes me feel, fearless that someone else's feet will stealthily slip in while I look away - but only time will tell.
But, enough about my quest to monopolise my Crocs, here's what other women who've owned a pair of Crocs have to say about this shoe brand (updated with recent reader comments):
I had my first pair of original black Crocs in 2004. When I am on my feet all day they are super comfortable. I loved the Croc flip flops too but some kinds I had were not as comfortable as the originals and they shrank when I left them in the sun. I just bought a pair of very bright pink Crocs because they were on sale. So, yes, I'm a Crocs fan.
I'm wearing my 6th pair of Crocs. I simply love the comfort of Crocs. I am very fussy about shoes but have no complains when I wear Crocs.
Crocs makes my life easier as a nurse because they give a lot of comfort. My feet are so comfortable with a pair of Crocs.

I love Crocs because they bring so much comfort and ease to both my feet and mind, plus they go with absolutely anything from jeans, sweatpants or even a dress because of how aesthetic they are. They are also an easy go-to pair of shoes that you can never go wrong with. Lastly, it's a no-brainer that what I love most is that they're so easy to clean.
I bought a pair of Crocs platform flip-flops last year, and I declared it my best purchase of 2020. They look cute when paired with dresses in summer. Naturally, I have no complaints about comfort, although they can feel just a tad bit heavy sometimes due to their platform nature. I'm currently looking to add the classic clogs platforms to my collection and if I had R13 000 to spare, I would get the Balenciaga x Crocs 2.0 stiletto too.
I only ever had a pair of Crocs flip-flops, gifted by my mother. She has a couple pairs of sandals and slip in shoes too, and swears by them as they're perfect for her job as an aftercare teacher. Even though mine were a size too big, they fit great since they were flip flops. They were the most comfortable shoes to wear around at home, or dash out to the shop; also my faves for summer. But, they were so comfortable that my husband would wear them whenever I wasn't looking (even though he wears two sizes bigger than me. So unsurprisingly, they broke. I won't let him replace them because he'll only wear them again. And no, he won't buy himself a pair either. Men, I tell you.
I took a pair of the classic Croc slip on shoes with me when I did the Otter trail years ago. They weighed nothing and I wore them to cross the rivers. I also more recently had a pair of the calf-length wedge boots, they looked amazing and were very comfortable, but the soles weren't great and I slipped on a wet patch once and never trusted them again after that. I also wanted to buy their new gumboots but they were so uncomfortable, I decided not to.
I'm not too big on Crocs but I would love to own a pair of the new big wedge crocs in a bright colour for my retro outfits.
