World Champion Lewis Hamilton, who will start in P10, will be handed a replacement left front supersoft Pirelli for Sunday's European GP after flat-spotting his tyre in Q2. Note though that the left tyre will have the same mileage as the rest of the set.

18 Jun 2016

Ricciardo claims P3! Vettel goes P4!

Going to be tight if the have enough time to put in one more quick lap!

18 Jun 2016

Session will restart! Verstappen grabs the first position in the pitlane to get out there first. Vettel and Bottas behind him.

18 Jun 2016

Massa slots into P4 for now. Hamilton and Rosberg still down in P9 and P10.

18 Jun 2016

This track is looking very slippery at the moment.

It also messed up Rosberg's lap as the yellow flags slowed him down.

17 Jun 2016

That is it for now, join us again this afternoon for FP2 from Baku. Cheers.

17 Jun 2016

Vettel makes a late improvement to P5 while Sainz jumps to ninth.

17 Jun 2016

The chequered flag is waved and FP1 has reached its conclusion with Hamilton quickest ahead of Rosberg and Bottas.

17 Jun 2016

There is no one out on track who looks set to challenge Hamilton's P1 time so he will end with the inaugural Baku P1.

17 Jun 2016

Two Force Indias and two McLarens inside the top ten makes for an interesting timesheet.

17 Jun 2016

Argy-bargy between Grosjean and Ericsson into Turn 1. The latter goes down the escape road.

17 Jun 2016

Sainz meets the barrier nose first. A gentle tap at Turn 15 and the wing doesn't appear damaged but he heads back into the pits.

17 Jun 2016

Sainz and Kvyat are both out on the supersofts while the others who have headed out are on the softs.

17 Jun 2016

The track is once again green-lighted.

17 Jun 2016

Don't expect to see Hamilton again this session as Mercedes have revealed he has flat-spotted the tyres they intended him to use for a long run.

17 Jun 2016

We are still under the red flag as the marshals clear Ricciardo's car and the debris. A track is there is now to remove it.

17 Jun 2016

It was not a big mistake from Ricciardo but one that had serious consequences.

17 Jun 2016

And now we have a proper meeting with the wall as Ricciardo hits it hard at Turn 15, causing significant damage to the rear of his RB12. The rear right tyre is hanging on only by its teether. Red flag.

17 Jun 2016

Palmer's turn to cover as he has a moment at Turn 4.

17 Jun 2016

Having tested the track limits, Hamilton has now brushed the wall. It was, however, the gentlest of touches at the Turn 3 wall. I've hit a wall guys," he said.

17 Jun 2016

Top ten: Hamilton, Rosberg, Bottas, Alonso, Perez, Hulkenberg, Button, Raikkonen, Vettel and Ricciardo.

17 Jun 2016

Verstappen reports that Red Bull "found an issue, I don't know what it is" with his car and thus he's chatting to reporters instead of putting in laps. He hopes to get back out soon.

17 Jun 2016

Hamilton adds his name to the list of those heading down an escape road. He works his way back onto the track without any troubles.

17 Jun 2016

Hamilton ups his pace on the supersofts to a 1:46.435.

17 Jun 2016

The Manors are also out with Wehrlein on the mediums and Haryanto on the softs so a mix of strategies going on.

17 Jun 2016

Bottas and Alonso have both left the pits on the soft tyres.

17 Jun 2016

Rosberg goes quickest but also immediately loses out to Hamilton. A 1:46.489 for the Brit, who is 0.323s quicker than Rosberg.

17 Jun 2016

Brake work going on at Ferrari as both cars are having work done with the calipers.

17 Jun 2016

Hamilton and Rosberg have both taken to the track and with the supersoft tyres on their W07s.

17 Jun 2016

All 22 cars are in the pits with Bottas leading the timesheets ahead of Hamilton, Rosberg, Perez, Alonso and Hulkenberg.

17 Jun 2016

Work going on at the rear end of Verstappen's RB12 which is sans its floor.

17 Jun 2016

Ricciardo gets caught up in a Sauber sandwich, passes one only to find another waiting on the apex of the corner which forces him to back off. He is P9.

17 Jun 2016

New P1 as Bottas does a 1:47.707 on the soft tyres, same rubber that the two Mercedes drivers used for their best times.

17 Jun 2016

Ericsson locks up at Turn 1 and takes to the escape road, Magnussen heads down the Turn 3 escape road and Perez goes fourth quickest.

17 Jun 2016

Hamilton leads with a 1:48.214, Rosberg is second, 0.2s down, followed by Bottas, Button, Raikkonen and Verstappen.

17 Jun 2016

Kvyat down the escape road at Turn 15.

17 Jun 2016

We've also had a spin for Vettel through Turn 16.

17 Jun 2016

We have a Haas down an escape road, it is Gutierrez. A bit of a mission trying to work his way out of it.

17 Jun 2016

Magnussen is trying to slipstream a Manor but fails to get the boost needed. Mercedes power!

17 Jun 2016

Vettel's next lap is a 1:56.2, still seven seconds down on Hamilton's P1 time.

17 Jun 2016

Here comes Vettel and it is a 1:57.7 on his first exploration lap.

17 Jun 2016

Most of the drivers are lapping on the soft tyres including Button, who has just slotted into fifth place behind the Mercedes drivers and the Williams pairing.

17 Jun 2016

New P1 as Hamilton lays down a 1:49.174 to edge Rosberg by 0.9s.

17 Jun 2016

Interesting approach to the lines from Massa as he compromises his entrance in order to get a great exit that allows him to attack the next corner. Expect to see drivers trying different things this session.

17 Jun 2016

Rosberg continues to shave seconds off his time and lowers the benchmark to a 1:50.100. Bottas is second, 2.6s down and Hamilton third, 2.8s off the pace.

17 Jun 2016

A new nose for Ricciardo, well for his RB12, and he heads out.

17 Jun 2016

Another lap from Rosberg, this time it is a 1:53.481. Hamilton's first lap is 2.2s slower.

17 Jun 2016

First time comes from Rosberg with a 1:57.306 as he goes over 300kph.

17 Jun 2016

Felipe Massa, Valtteri Bottas, Max Verstappen are out on track and they are now joined by Lewis Hamilton and Rosberg.

17 Jun 2016

As the drivers wide their way through Turn 8 you can see how tight it is and how extremely close the drivers get to the walls.

17 Jun 2016

The pit lane is green-lighted as Esteban Gutierrez leads out the field for the first lap of the Baku circuit.

17 Jun 2016

Air temperature is 27'C and the track is 44'C as we await the start of FP1.

17 Jun 2016

Five minutes to the start of the unknown.

17 Jun 2016

There are also concerns about the pit entrance as drivers come off the high-speed main straight and head through a kink in the slip road before applying the pit lane speed limiter. That is only used as they enter the actual pit lane. Here's hoping it proves to be a safe ride into the pits.

17 Jun 2016

Championship leader Nico Rosberg added: "A little bit of a concern with those run-offs. So that's not great and we need to see how it goes. There's corner 14, where there's a wall straight-on, turn three, and then the pit entry as well. So not fantastic."

17 Jun 2016

Having walked the track earlier this week, some drivers have voiced concerns about the layout and the lack of the run-off. Jenson Button said: "Turn seven has three Tecpro barriers and then a concrete barrier at the edge of the circuit. There's not much you can really do because there's a building in the way. Hopefully they (the FIA) have done their tests, but Monaco has got a lot of run-off. This is a high-speed street circuit, it's not like Monaco."

17 Jun 2016

This is Formula 1's first foray into Baku, where a 6km circuit winds it way through the streets of the capital in an anticlockwise direction. The track features a 2.2km straight, the longest on the calendar.

17 Jun 2016

Welcome to the Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan and the new home of the European Grand Prix. All times are local.

Mercedes look quick on the straights, could be set for a one-two finish on Sunday...

17 Jun 2016

Raikkonen still outside the top ten while Vettel is chilling in P6.

17 Jun 2016

The buildings look well aged here in Baku...

17 Jun 2016

Hamilton almost goes off track there!

Interesting, Massa is lapping nowhere near the pace as Bottas.

Track is looking busy now! Plenty of drivers out there.
