13 Oct 2019

The end of the season is really getting close, isn't it? The "fight" for the constructors' championship ended today, while only Hamilton and Bottas can now mathematically win the title. Can the Finn take his second straight win to keep his slim title chances alive next week in Mexico? Or will the Brit storm to his sixth? Join us from Friday onwards to find out. See you there.

13 Oct 2019

The full finishing order today: P1 Bottas, P2 Vettel, P3 Hamilton, P4 Albon, P5 Sainz, P6 Ricciardo, P7 Leclerc P8 Gasly, P9 Perez, P10 Hulkenberg, P11 Stroll, P12 Kvyat, P13 Norris, P14 Raikkonen, P15 Grosjean, P16 Giovinazzi, P17 Magnussen, P18 Russell, P19 Kubica, P20 Verstappen (retired).

13 Oct 2019

Despite crashing on the last lap, Sergio Perez remains classified in P9, and Nico Hulkenberg takes the final point.

13 Oct 2019

Daniel Ricciardo reminded the world of his talent today, finishing in P7 and making some great overtakes along the way. Pierre Gasly meanwhile takes P8, which isn't enough to stay ahead of Sainz in the standings.

13 Oct 2019

Carlos Sainz drives another excellent race to finish P5. Leclerc comes home in P6 but crucially, didn't manage to get an extra point for fastest lap, meaning Mercedes are the constructors' champions for the sixth consecutive year!

13 Oct 2019

Vettel just about holds off Hamilton to take P2 ahead of the Brit, with Albon getting his best ever result in F1, coming home in P4.

13 Oct 2019

Valtteri Bottas wins the Japanese Grand Prix!

13 Oct 2019

Sergio Perez was making a late charge for the points and had moved up to P8 but he's now crashed and is out of the race.

13 Oct 2019

Final lap and Bottas is cruising.

13 Oct 2019

Hamilton tries to pass Vettel around the outside of Turn 1 but can't quite get through.

13 Oct 2019

What a day this has been for Renault. Ricciardo passes Gasly for P7 and Hulkenberg moves up to P9.

13 Oct 2019

As is often the case, that Ferrari straight-line speed is making the car rather difficult to pass.

13 Oct 2019

Leclerc pits. If he gets a time penalty after the race, he'll definitely drop a few positions.

13 Oct 2019

Hamilton now right on the back of Vettel and has six laps to pass him.

13 Oct 2019

Hulkenberg lets Ricciardo past to allow the Aussie to have a go at Stroll. The latter gives his thanks and quickly does so, moving up to P8.

13 Oct 2019

Rather bafflingly, Ferrari want to pit Leclerc so he can get an extra point for fastest lap. They've presumably completely forgotten that he may well get a time penalty after the race which would drop him behind the group he'd come out in front of. Vintage Ferrari.

13 Oct 2019

Hamilton pits! On fresh softs, he comes out just under five seconds behind Vettel and has ten laps to get him.

13 Oct 2019

Ricciardo moves up into P10, passing Perez.

13 Oct 2019

Bottas has Vettel covered and is now waiting for Hamilton to pit. Surely his team haven't just outright lied to him to give Hamilton the win...

13 Oct 2019

Bottas asks the team if they're sure Hamilton is pitting; they reassure him that he is.

13 Oct 2019

Vettel goes purple to close the gap ahead to seven and a half seconds. Keep going, Seb...

13 Oct 2019

Bottas pits for soft tyres and comes out eight seconds behind Hamilton and has the same gap behind to Vettel. The big question now is will he have to pass his team-mate on track?

13 Oct 2019

Leclerc gets past Gasly at the inside of spoon with a great move.

13 Oct 2019

Leclerc passes Stroll at the inside of Turn 1 to move up to P7. Next up, Gasly.

13 Oct 2019

Vettel pits for fresh medium tyres. Will Mercedes bring Hamilton in or are they committing him to the one-stop?

13 Oct 2019

He passes Perez at 180r to move up to P9.

13 Oct 2019

Ricciardo finally pits, promoting Leclerc back into the points. The Ferrari man is now all over Perez and Hulkenberg.

13 Oct 2019

Vettel currently 11 seconds behind Bottas and five ahead of Hamilton.

13 Oct 2019

Kvyat pits, meaning Ricciardo, currently in P5, is the only driver yet to stop.

13 Oct 2019

There's overtaking all over the place in the midfield, with Hulkenberg and Perez passing Kvyat and now fighting each other.

13 Oct 2019

Carlos Sainz finally pits after 27 laps on used softs. He comes out in P6.

13 Oct 2019

Leclerc pits from P7, going on to brand spanking new soft tyres which should get him to the end. He comes out in P12.

13 Oct 2019

If you took a shot every time Hamilton moaned on the radio today, you'd be passed out already. He's, as always, rather unhappy with the strategy he's been put on.

13 Oct 2019

Mercedes tell Hamilton they don't think the one-stop will be an easy race. Judging by that, Bottas is definitely doing a two-stop, as is Vettel. Hamilton will have to manage his tyres *seriously* well if he wants to win this.

13 Oct 2019

Hamilton pits for mediums and comes out in P3, ten seconds behind Vettel.

13 Oct 2019

Bottas, on the slower tyre than Vettel, is going purple and pulling away from the German. With how much he's pushing his tyres, he may well be on a two-stopper too.

13 Oct 2019

The stewards have decided to wait until the end of the race to investigate the incident between Verstappen and Leclerc.

13 Oct 2019

Mercedes react and bring Bottas in. He goes on to the medium tyre and will presumably be doing a one-stop race, which is supposedly the quicker strategy.

13 Oct 2019

Vettel pits for soft tyres and will therefore be doing a two-stopper today.

13 Oct 2019

Albon pits and comes out just ahead of Leclerc. He'll be hoping to pull off the undercut on Sainz.

13 Oct 2019

Max Verstappen is retiring from the race due to the damage picked up in the Lap 1 incident with Leclerc. Simultaneously, thousands of Dutchies retire back to bed.

13 Oct 2019

The stewards have decided against penalising Vettel for his false start. A huge relief for him and Ferrari, and great for the race. Mind you, he's still quite a bit slower than the Silver Arrows.

13 Oct 2019

Upfront, Bottas leads Vettel by less than three seconds, with Hamilton a further two seconds off the German.

13 Oct 2019

Vettel now under investigation for the jump start. So, both Ferrari's under investigation and both likely to get a penalty. Mercedes are laughing their way to the bank.

13 Oct 2019

Leclerc passes Verstappen at Turn 1 to move up to - *checks notes* - P16. Dizzy heights.

13 Oct 2019

One team faring well so far today is Renault. Having started P15 and P16, Hulkenberg and Ricciardo are now in P8 and P10 respectively.

13 Oct 2019

Charles Leclerc is now investigation for causing a collision with Verstappen at the start. Things just get better and better for Ferrari.

13 Oct 2019

Lando Norris has been barged off track by Alex Albon and is now down in P20 with some kind of issue. Expect a penalty for Albon...

13 Oct 2019

The other Ferrari is faring better, currently in P2, but replays show he jumped the starting before stopping and then moving again, so he may well get a penalty. What a disaster for the Scuderia.

13 Oct 2019

Leclerc has now come in to change his wing and comes back out in P20. He's on the medium tyre and will struggle to do a one-stop now.

13 Oct 2019

Leclerc, with pieces of his wing flying everywhere on track, still stays out, ignoring his team. He says the car feels fine.

13 Oct 2019

Incredibly, Leclerc hasn't come in for repairs yet.

13 Oct 2019

And we're off! The Ferraris start poorly and both are passed by Bottas who got a great getaway! Leclerc then gets wing damage after trying to hold off Verstappen, who is pushed off track and is now down to P18!

13 Oct 2019

They're now making their way around the track. Here we go...

13 Oct 2019

The cars are fired up and the formation lap is about to get underway...

13 Oct 2019

Worth noting though, that Ferrari have been experiencing more tyre degradation than Red Bull and Mercedes this weekend. If anyone has to do a two-stop today, it'll be them, and it could lose them the race.

13 Oct 2019

Ten minutes prior to lights out, let's talk strategy. With the soft tyre looking good for 20+ laps here, most are expected to run one-stop races, moving from the soft to medium or vice-versa. With overtaking so difficult here, getting your stop right is crucial.

13 Oct 2019

The Japanese taking a typically minimalist approach to the national anthem. No bands, no choirs, just a one man show, and I'll be honest, it wasn't great.

13 Oct 2019

The bottom two on the grid, Magnussen and Kubica, both had pretty heavy crashes at the final turn courtesy of a tailwind. Both had to have their gearbox replaced, while the latter is still having work done on his chassis. If that tailwind is still around in a few minutes, things could get interesting...

13 Oct 2019

The rest of today's grid: P11 Giovinazzi, P12 Stroll, P13 Raikkonen, P14 Kvyat, P15 Hulkenberg, P16 Ricciardo, P17 Perez, P18 Russell, P19 Magnussen, P20 Kubica (pit-lane).

13 Oct 2019

Completing the top ten are the McLarens of Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris (Lando didn't try sushi so won't be allowed through) and the French men of the grid, Pierre Gasly and Romain Grosjean.

13 Oct 2019

It was a mightily impressive first-ever qualifying session at this track for Alex Albon. The Thai driver put in the exact same lap time as Max Verstappen in Q3 and starts just behind the Dutchman. Neither looks like they have the car to fight at the front today, but you never know...

13 Oct 2019

Valtteri Bottas came into today arguably the favourite to take pole position after topping both practice sessions, but he too was caught off guard by the pace of the Prancing Horse. On the bright side for him, he does start ahead of team-mate Lewis Hamilton after going less than a hundredth quicker than the Brit.

13 Oct 2019

If you're in the western world and are suffering an early start, don't worry, you're not dreaming - Ferrari really did lock out the front row. Yep, out of nowhere, Sebastian Vettel stormed to pole position, ending up nearly two tenths clear of team-mate Charles Leclerc.

13 Oct 2019

With qualifying taking place just a few hours ago, you probably don't need a reminder of what happened, but hey, let's go and run through the grid anyway.

13 Oct 2019

The race gets underway in just under an hour's time here in warm and sunny Suzuka where Typhoon Hagibis is long gone.

13 Oct 2019

Out are: Ricciardo, Perez, Russell and of course Magnussen and Kubica. Leclerc was quickest with a 1:28.4 while Hamilton moved up to second, 0.330s down.

13 Oct 2019

Stroll moves up to tenth place with Raikkonen up to 12th and Ricciardo P14. The Renault driver could be in trouble as the chequered flag falls.

13 Oct 2019

Stroll and Raikkonen are having a go now with the latter having to back off to make room.

13 Oct 2019

Grosjean jumps up to eighth place, making the most of a quiet track to improve his time.

13 Oct 2019

Drop zone with 6 minutes remaining: Perez, Raikkonen, Grosjean, Magnussen and Kubica. We can safely say the latter two won't be setting times.

13 Oct 2019

Leclerc goes quickest ahead of Verstappen, Vettel, Sainz, Albon and Bottas. Hamilton is P7. Great lap from Sainz!

13 Oct 2019

There is a serious traffic jam out there with drivers jockeying for position and others slowing down to make room. Not great for getting heat into the tyres for a hot lap.

13 Oct 2019

Back to green with 11:42 on the clock and Gasly up in P1.

13 Oct 2019

Recovery vehicle is back in action as too are the witches brooms. Magnussen is back in the pits.

13 Oct 2019

Despite being wing-less, he kept the engine running and has reversed his way out of the barriers and is heading back tot he pits. His Haas' rear wing looks as if it hanging on by a wing and a prayer. He was caught out by the wind and literally blown off the track at the final corner.

13 Oct 2019

Oh more troubles as Kevin Magnussen is in the barrier and the red flag is out again.

13 Oct 2019

Green light and this time the Alfas lead the field out followed by the Toro Rossos and Racing Points.

13 Oct 2019

Car cleared, track cleared, marshals cleared and restart scheduled for a minute from now.

13 Oct 2019

There must be 30 marshals out there sweeping the track. Talk about efficient.

13 Oct 2019

The recovery crew is on the scene to clear away the mess and put the various trackside advertising that Kubica took out back into place.

13 Oct 2019

The Williams driver got it wrong out of the final corner, crept onto the grass and kept going straight into the Armco barrier. That's his qualifying over and maybe even his race as Williams have a problem with spare parts.

13 Oct 2019

Kubica goes out and out he goes... nose first into the wall. Red flag.

13 Oct 2019

Pit lane light is green and out go the two Ferraris followed by Sainz and Hulkenberg.

13 Oct 2019

Super Sunday set to begin...

13 Oct 2019

Air temperature is 22'C, track is 33'C.

13 Oct 2019

The drivers face a difficult task this morning as, while trying to go as fast as possible and grab the best grid slot, they have to contend with blustery wind while keeping their cars out of the barriers. There are just three hours between the end of qualifying and the start of the race, well three hours and ten random minutes.

13 Oct 2019

The bottom half: Kimi Raikkonen, Daniil Kvyat, Romain Grosjean, Lance Stroll, Antonio Giovinazzi, Kevin Magnussen, Daniel Ricciardo, Nico Hulkenberg, George Russell and Robert Kubica.

13 Oct 2019

Carlos Sainz, Sergio Perez, Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris completed the top ten.

13 Oct 2019

Valtteri Bottas set the pace on Friday, fastest in both practice sessions ahead of Lewis Hamilton. But while the Mercedes pairing were almost a second ahead of Sebastian Vettel in FP1, the gap was reduced to 0.3 in FP2 with Max Verstappen P3 ahead of Charles Leclerc, Vettel and Alexander Albon.

13 Oct 2019

This is the fifth time in F1 history that qualifying has been held on a Sunday. The previous pole position men were Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel x 2 and Nico Rosberg. Who will take it today? Based on Friday's showing, Mercedes.

13 Oct 2019

After Typhoon Hagibis swept through Japan yesterday, bringing with it lashing rain and high winds, we have beautiful sunshine here this morning, although it is still a bit windy. Nothing typhoon level, though.

13 Oct 2019

Welcome back to Suzuka this Sunday morning, yip Sunday, for qualifying for the Japanese GP.

Bottas puts in a late lap to end Q2 quickest of all ahead of Hamilton and Albon while out are Giovinazzi, Stroll, Raikkonen, Kvyat and Hulkenberg.

13 Oct 2019

The chequered flag is out...

13 Oct 2019

Hulkenberg is having a few problems with his RS19 and is told "do not change gear, back to the garage". The message includes: "You have a major problem". Not a great start to super Sunday for the Renault team.

13 Oct 2019

Run number 2 is underway. Always amazes that the drivers all go out together, leave the track together, and then complain about traffic.

13 Oct 2019

Drop zone are: Gasly, Kvyat, Giovinazzi, Stroll and Hulkenberg.

13 Oct 2019

Bottas goes P3, make that P4 as Hamilton takes the top spot with a 1:27.826. Verstappen is P5 ahead of Albon, Sainz and Raikkonen.

13 Oct 2019

But here comes Hamilton and it is a whole bunch of purples...

13 Oct 2019

Traffic is again proving problematic as Grosjean and Albon pull right over and slow to a snails pace to let Leclerc come through. He's flier puts him P2, 0.005s down on Vettel's best.

13 Oct 2019

Green light and Q2 is underway.

13 Oct 2019

The wind has picked up a bit since the start of Q1 but hopefully the drivers now all have a better understanding - and respect - of it.

13 Oct 2019

Into Q2 we go with Leclerc, Hamilton, Verstappen, Norris, Bottas, Vettel, Sainz, Albon, Gasly, Grosjean, Stroll, Giovinazzi, Hulkenberg, Raikkonen, Kvyat.

13 Oct 2019

Well that's it from us for now. Join us again in 2 hours, yip 2 hours, for our build-up to the Japanese Grand Prix. Bye for now.

13 Oct 2019

Well done Vettel, that's Ferrari's 64th front row lock out.

13 Oct 2019

That's pole position for Vettel, Ferrari's fifth in a row!!! Leclerc will start P2 ahead of the Mercedes drivers, the Red Bulls then it is Sainz, Norris, Gasly and Grosjean.

13 Oct 2019

Bottas can't, he stays P3 while Hamilton is fourth ahead of Verstappen and Albon.

13 Oct 2019

Purple in the second for Leclerc, Vettel is only green. And across the line Leclerc remains P2 while Vettel ups his pace to a 1:27.064. Only Merc could steal it as the chequered flag falls.

13 Oct 2019

Gasly, Norris and Sainz are the first to start their hot laps followed by Leclerc, Verstappen and Vettel. It's purple in the first for Leclerc but that is taken by Vettel...

13 Oct 2019

Out comes Vettel but he's is third in the queue behind Leclerc and one of the Red Bulls.

13 Oct 2019

The cars are being readied for a second run...

13 Oct 2019

Vettel's time, a new track record, puts him on provisional pole ahead of Leclerc, Bottas, Hamilton, Verstappen, Albon, Norris, Sainz and Gasly. No time from Grosjean.

13 Oct 2019

Bottas hits the front with a 1:27.6, 0.1s up on Hamilton. But there come the Ferraris. Leclerc goes quickest and then Vettel. A 1:27.212 for the German.

13 Oct 2019

Norris is the first man to start a hot lap ahead of Gasly on the track. Bottas and Hamilton are next in line ahead of Sainz, Leclerc and Vettel. Verstappen and Albon are the last two in the queue while Grosjean has remained in the pits.

13 Oct 2019

And again we have drivers bunching up at the final chicane as they all try to make a gap to the driver ahead.

13 Oct 2019

Green light and the pole position shoot-out for the Japanese GP is underway.

13 Oct 2019

Q3 and we have Bottas, Hamilton, Albon, Vettel, Leclerc, Verstappen, Norris, Sainz, Gasly, and Grosjean still in the running.

11 Oct 2019

Join us in two hours for second practice, the final practice session of the Japanese GP weekend after Saturday's action was cancelled due to the approaching typhoon. Cheers!

11 Oct 2019

Mercedes' rivals have a lot to do over the next two hours if they hope to close the gap in FP2.

11 Oct 2019

The chequered flag is out on FP1 with a dominant 1-2 from Mercedes. Bottas is P1, 0.079s up on Hamilton, while P3 goes to Vettel but he is 0.989s off the pace.

11 Oct 2019

Alfa Romeo have confirmed a hydraulic leak on Giovinazzi's car. They are still hoping to get him out for a lap before the end of this session but the clock is against them.

11 Oct 2019

Grosjean and Raikkonen are just outside the top ten, both 0.3s down on Norris' P10 time.

11 Oct 2019

Yamamoto puts in his 23rd lap and so far so good for the Honda youngster who has not made a single mistake - or at least none that we caught.

11 Oct 2019

Raikkonen is out for lap number 22 but alas his poor team-mate is still sitting in the pits with just four on the board. Not great especially with Saturday's final practice cut from the schedule.

11 Oct 2019

Sainz, P1, is best of the rest but is 1.9s off the pace. That is crazy, and worrying, and not great for F1.

11 Oct 2019

It may just be first practice on Friday but a look at the timesheets will have Mercedes' rivals rather worried. Vettel is the only driver within a second of Bottas' P1 time but he is 0.989s down. Leclerc in fourth is 1.1 with Verstappen a further 0.2 off the pace and Albon 0.3 behind his team-mate.

11 Oct 2019

Kvyat finally moves ahead of Yamamoto - and likely breathes a sigh of relief at that.

11 Oct 2019

Gasly, sitting out this session, is on the Toro Rosso pit wall keeping an eye on the action and seeing if there is anything he can learn.

11 Oct 2019

He is purple in the first sector and again the second, 0.2s up on Hamilton... he goes P1 witha 1:28.731. That put him 0.076s faster than Hamilton.

11 Oct 2019

Can Bottas respond?

11 Oct 2019

He is up by 0.3s in the first sector alone! 0.591s in the second!! And goes quickest with a 1:28.807. That is 0.913s faster than Vettel's best.

11 Oct 2019

Mercedes are back out on track with fresh soft tyres on the W10s. But does Hamilton have an issue as his front left is smoking? Must have been a lock up as everything seems fine now.

11 Oct 2019

Breaking news: Guenther Steiner, the Haas team boss, has been ordered to see the Japanese GP stewards between FP1 and FP2. The Austrian is being charged with breaching the international sporting code after criticising the stewards at the Russian GP following Kevin Magnussen's 5-second time penalty that cost him P8.

11 Oct 2019

Lance Stroll is the next to up his pace, jumping up to fifth place in the Racing Point.

11 Oct 2019

Leclerc only goes green, moving up to second behind his team-mate. He is 0.192s slower.

11 Oct 2019

Fresh soft boots for Vettel and that's P1. A 1:29.720 for the Ferrari driver who went purple in all three sectors.

11 Oct 2019

Great lap from Sainz moves him up to fifth place ahead of Vettel and Albon.

11 Oct 2019

Russell's lapping on fresh softs and jumps up to 15th place in the Williams.

11 Oct 2019

That was a brief run from Hamilton who is back in the pits in his W10.

11 Oct 2019

Newby watch: Yamamoto is P17 ahead of the Williams team-mates and Giovinazzi.

11 Oct 2019

Norris is out on a fresh set of soft Pirellis and improves of his P8 but only as far as seventh. He is 0.910s down on Bottas' P1 time.

11 Oct 2019

Norris and Hamilton are the first two back out on track. Still no sign of Giovinazzi after he lost power on his fourth lap of the session.

11 Oct 2019

40 minute mark so time to head back to the pits and return the first set of tyres to Pirelli. Expect a lull to follow.

11 Oct 2019

A massive lock up from Bottas as he tries to dive down the inside of the corner only to find a slow Leclerc in his path. Those mediums have definitely lost a layer of rubber.

11 Oct 2019

Leclerc, though, is able to find some time and goes P3, 0.210. He had a rather hairy moment riding the kerbs but managed to keep his SF90 on the track.

11 Oct 2019

Vettel starts another hot lap on his soft tyres but it is not going to challenge the Mercedes drivers. He loses 1.1s.

11 Oct 2019

Leclerc has the better of his team-mate in the early running but only just. The Monaco driver does a 1:31.222; Vettel a 1:31.295. Another Ferrari battle on the cards?

11 Oct 2019

Ferrari have joined the action with Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel heading out in formation.

11 Oct 2019

Alexander Albon has moved up to third behind the Mercedes drivers with Lando Norris and Romain Grosjean also making their marks on the timesheets. 11 times on the board.

11 Oct 2019

Antonio Giovinazzi is back in the pits after a rather slow 1:36.8. Did he make a mistake? Nope but he did seem to lose power near the end of the lap. More problems for Alfa? Hope not.

11 Oct 2019

Yamamoto is out for his first laps in a Formula 1, what a thrill for the young Honda protege. It's a 1:38.5.

11 Oct 2019

Three purples and Hamilton is down to a 1:30.8/

11 Oct 2019

First times on the board and we have a Mercedes 1-2 with a 1:31.7 from Hamilton and a 1:31.8 from Bottas. They are the only two drivers to have set times so far.

11 Oct 2019

Hamilton is out for a run and questioning the wind direction. He's told there is a "headwind into 1". Tomorrow there will just be wind!

11 Oct 2019

Sainz's MCL has been cleared and we're back to a green track with more installation laps coming through.

11 Oct 2019

The VSC is out as Sainz's efforts to get his stricken McLaren going haven't worked and it now needs a good push.

11 Oct 2019

Well everyone except Carlos Sainz who has ground to a halt on the side of the track on his out-lap.

11 Oct 2019

Green light let's go...

11 Oct 2019

Breaking news: Qualifying has been postponed to Sunday 10am as F1 and JAF cancel all Saturday activities due to the typhoon.

11 Oct 2019

We have a new lad in action today, Naoki Yamamoto. The Honda protege will replace Pierre Gasly in the Toro Rosso for FP1.

11 Oct 2019

Red Bull will be keen to get into the mix having managed just one top three result since F1 returned from the summer break. Max Verstappen, though, fears they could be as much as half a second off the pace per lap.

11 Oct 2019

Although the first half of the Suzuka circuit is a designed with aerodynamics in minds, the second half is all about power and if there is one thing Ferrari have, that's power. The Scuderia's engine is now the pick of the field while their SF90 has been designed to go fast on straights.

11 Oct 2019

Mercedes arrive at the Suzuka circuit as the team to beat having won every Japanese GP since the V6 engines arrived in 2014. Red Bull shared the spoils the past three years with Ferrari last on the podium back in 2015. This year, though, many are predicting Ferrari could come to the fore.

11 Oct 2019

For now, though, the show must go on and it kicks off this morning with first practice.

11 Oct 2019

The main focus at present is on Typhoon Hagibis which is continue on its course towards Japan. Billed as a "violent" story, the category 5 super storm, is expected to make landfall on Saturday bringing with it high winds and heavy rain. Formula 1 is expected to make a decision this afternoon about postponing qualifying until Sunday morning.

11 Oct 2019

Good morning and welcome to Suzuka, home of the Japanese Grand Prix and some of Formula 1's best fans! It is Friday which means two 90-practice sessions await. All times are local.

11 Oct 2019

Well, that's it now until Sunday with qualifying pushed back a day. Remember, if the track isn't raceable on Sunday morning, This order from FP2 will form the grid. If all goes to plan, join us Sunday for qualifying.

11 Oct 2019

P11 Raikkonen, P12 Kvyat, P13 Grosjean, P14 Stroll, P15 Giovinazzi, P16 Magnussen, P17 Ricciardo, P18 Hulkenberg, P19 Kubica and P20 Russell completes the order.

11 Oct 2019

P4 Leclerc, P5 Vettel, P6 Albon, P7 Sainz, P8 Perez, P9 Gasly and P10 Norris completes the top half of the FP2 order.

11 Oct 2019

Bottas is fastest again ahead of team-mate Hamilton in FP2, Verstappen is their closest challenger in P3, 0.28s down on Bottas, but his race sims were distant from that of the Mercedes pair.

11 Oct 2019

P4 for Leclerc with a 1:28.1. Vettel is P5 and two tenths shy of his team-mate.

11 Oct 2019

Indeed Leclerc heads onto the track with Vettel. Brand new softs for both.

11 Oct 2019

Leclerc is wheeled back into the pits. Ferrari may yet still go for a final run with 6 minutes to go.

11 Oct 2019

Drivers at this stage are instead focusing on race sims using the medium tyre. The teams must be confident that qualifying will go ahead.

11 Oct 2019

A tough session for Renault so far. Ricciardo finds himself in P16, for Hulkenberg it's P18.

11 Oct 2019

A bit of a moment there for Ferrari as both Leclerc and Vettel come very close in a battle for track position to start the lap. Vettel was certainly the one who lost out there.

11 Oct 2019

30 minutes to go in the session. We should see plenty of action as the drivers look to set a qualifying-worthy time, just in case qualy doesn't happen and it needs to be.

11 Oct 2019

The midfield battle is hotting up nicely here. Sainz is now up to P7 for McLaren. His team-mate Lando Norris is P9 behind Perez.

11 Oct 2019

Albon splits the Ferraris with his latest effort on the soft rubber.

11 Oct 2019

Bottas goes fastest now with a 1:27.785. Verstappen makes a solid improvement of his own to go P3, 0.281s down on Bottas' benchmark.

11 Oct 2019

SportPesa Racing Point are the current 'best-of-the-rest' with Sergio Perez in P7. Romain Grosjean goes P8 ahead of Lance Stroll to split the pink cars.

11 Oct 2019

Leclerc is on the softs now and moves into P4 behind his team-mate. The two Ferraris and Verstappen are separated by under a tenth.

11 Oct 2019

Bit of breaking news. The FIA have reached their verdict on Guenther Steiner's team radio comments in Sochi after Kevin Magnussen was given his five-second time penalty. The Haas principal will be fined â?¬7,500.

11 Oct 2019

Hamilton finally gets his flying lap in, and what a time it is, a 1:27.8 to beat Vettel's effort by half a second.

11 Oct 2019

Albon is up to P3, two tenths behind Verstappen. A good showing so far.

11 Oct 2019

Bottas spins out of the final corner. No flying lap for him then, and it also ruined Hamilton's who lost DRS use due to the yellow flags.

11 Oct 2019

Leclerc is persisting with the medium tyres as both Hamilton and Bottas begin their out-laps on the red-walled soft tyres.

11 Oct 2019

Very strong lap there from Verstappen who goes within a tenth of Vettel. Now Mercedes what have you got?

11 Oct 2019

Vettel switches to the soft rubber and raises the bar to a 1:28.392.

11 Oct 2019

Albon is released from the weighbridge and heads back to the Red Bull garage.

11 Oct 2019

Daniel Ricciardo puts his Renault into P4, but he was running the softs. As was team-mate Nico Hulkenberg who improves to P7.

11 Oct 2019

Albon sets the fastest final sector of the session so far to go P2 and split the Mercedes pair. A good start to the session for Albon, the Red Bull man was running the medium tyres like Mercedes.

11 Oct 2019

A 1:29.469 for Bottas on the mediums, Hamilton slots into P2 0.29s behind. Carlos Sainz improves to P3 with Alex Albon sitting P4 now ahead of Vettel.

11 Oct 2019

Vettel improves to a 1:30.2 as Bottas sets off on his first flying lap.

11 Oct 2019

No sign of his team-mate Leclerc going out yet. There are threatening clouds around, so this is a risky move from Ferrari.

11 Oct 2019

Vettel sets the first time of this session, a 1:30.386 on the medium tyres.

11 Oct 2019

40% chance of rain officially for this session.

11 Oct 2019

Vettel is the first man out, he was very eager to get on track.

11 Oct 2019

The green light goes on. Get set for what should be a far busier FP2 than usual.

11 Oct 2019

Just a few minutes to go now until FP2 gets underway at a cloudy but calm Suzuka.

11 Oct 2019

Vital because qualifying has been pushed back to Sunday due to the expected impacts of Typhoon Hagibis, and in the event of qualifying not going ahead, the FP2 standings would set the grid for the race.

11 Oct 2019

Antonio Giovinazzi suffered a suspected hydraulic issue in FP1 and propped up the standings, he will hope for more running in what could prove a vital FP2 session.

11 Oct 2019

Red Bull have a new fuel available to them for the weekend. Max Verstappen was able to get within two tenths of Charles Leclerc in FP1, but the big question will be whether they can compete when Ferrari move through their engine modes.

11 Oct 2019

Ferrari were well adrift in FP1. Sebastian Vettel was their best challenger in P3, yet a second slower than Bottas. Will they turn up the engines in this session?

11 Oct 2019

Mercedes dominated FP1 with Valtteri Bottas taking top spot 0.076s quicker than team-mate Lewis Hamilton.

11 Oct 2019
