The Monaco Grand Prix has been on the race calendar for 65 years, but for the first time since 1954, the streets will be quiet this year when it comes around to prestigious event.

The FIA announced late on Thursday (March 19) the next batch of races affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The Danish and Spanish races have been postponed while the Monaco street race is cancelled, only to take place in 2021.

The first race took place in 1929, and this will only be the fifth time the world championship has not included the Monaco GP which would have been held in the Principality. The race was not held for four consecutive years from 1951 and resumed in 1955.

Channel24 reported on Thursday (March 19) the Palace has confirmed that Prince Albert of Monaco has tested positive for the coronavirus.

The 62-year-old billionaire is the reigning monarch of Monaco and the son of Prince Rainier III and Grace Kelly, who went on to become the Princess of Monaco. He is married to former South African swimmer, Charlene Wittstock, now Princess Charlene.

In a statement on Thursday afternoon, they said, "Prince Albert II of Monaco, who was tested earlier this week, is positive for Covid-19."

Despite the seriousness of this global crisis, F1 Twitter fans have shared a little bit of comic relief in this time of gloom, expressing their sadness in the decision to cancel the event.
