Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton was named the richest sports star in Britain in the 2020 Sunday Times Rich List.

The 35-year-old has a net worth of £224-million an increase of £37-million compared to the previous year, the list revealed.

Hamilton's worth surpasses the £200-million former football star David Beckham posted in 2013.

Hamilton boasts a lucrative contract with the Mercedes F1 team which is worth up to £40-million a year, including bonuses, the Times reported.

The Mercedes driver has won six F1 championships and is aiming to win a seventh and equal German Michael Schumacher as the sport's most successful driver. The F1 season is currently on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The only other sportsman on the list is Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy, he boasts a net worth of £170-million an increase of £32-million.
