Earlier this year, carmakers scrambled to launch new models via live stream after the Geneva motor show was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
And with many countries still under lockdown and traveling bans in place, the likelihood of unveiling new cars with motoring media present is unlikely in the short term.
But that's not stopping Italian supercar manufacturer Lamborghini. The company say it's the first automotive brand to use Augmented Reality (AR) for the virtual launch of a new car. The model in question is the Huracán Evo RWD Spyder.
Scheduled for May 7 at 13:00 CAT (Central African Time) via the Lamborghini website.
Lamborghini CEO Stefano Domenicali, said: "Starting tomorrow, Lamborghini can be in everyone's home thanks to Apple's AR technology, which is available on hundreds of millions of AR-enabled devices around the world."
Apple devices only
They've teamed up with technology company Apple and by using its AR program Quick Look, viewers can see thet V10-powered super sports car from anywhere in the world: all they need is an iPhone or iPad*.
How it works
The automaker says while looking at the Lamborghini website on your iPhone or iPad, simply tap "See in AR" and the new open-top rear-wheel drive model can be admired in people's driveways, gardens or even sitting rooms.
The viewer can even rotate and expand the size of the vehicle, including on a 1:1 scale, and zoom in on its exterior and interior details and taking pictures of the new car with a high level of 'photorealism'.
This tech will roll out for the entire Lamborghini range soon says the company.
* AR requires an iPhone or iPad with iOS 11 and an A9 processor or later. This includes iPhone 6 and later, including iPhone SE, iPad Pro, iPad (5th generation or later), iPad mini (5th generation or later), iPad Air (3rd generation), and iPod touch (7th generation).
