EXPLAINED | How Koenigsegg squeezes 450kw from a three-cylinder engine in its new Gemera hypercar

Koenigsegg was one of the few car manufacturers who didn't dismantle its stand at the cancelled Geneva motor show earmarked for early March. Switzerland banned gatherings of over 1000 people due to the coronavirus outbreak. 

Instead, the company unveiled its first-ever stab at a four-seat mega car via a live stream like many other carmakers.

The Gemera is something to behold as it looks like nothing else in the car world. They say it'll rocket from 0-100km/h in under 1.9 seconds and has a top speed of over 400km/h. 

So what on earth is powering this belligerent car? That's where it gets interesting, Koenigsegg has managed to fuse a 2.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, with twin-turbocharging, and no less than three electric motors as Wheels24 reported.

The engine reportedly weighs just 70kg. 

The total output is 1268kW, with 440kW derived from the three-cylinder engine. Yes, read that sentence again. In fact, the engine is so smart it can run in two-stroke mode when the boost dries up. 

To get all that power down onto the road, the Gemera is fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres as standard and while Michelin Cup R3 rubber is optional. The tyre size for the front is a 295/30 ZR21 with massive 315/30 ZR22's at the tyre. 

The company says the internal combustion engine has a range of up to 950km, with an electric-only range at 50km, bringing the total range to around 1000km.
