Hyundai's new Creta has landed in South Africa, and from the offset, one can see that it is a radical departure from the model it replaces. The SUV, one of a few in Hyundai's local lineup, boasts several updates. These include revisions to the exterior, the cabin, and the drivetrain.
The Creta was first launched in South Africa in 2017. Back then, the SUV impressed on a few fronts, most notably its aggressive price point and value-for-money proposition. Fast-forward three years and the SUV grew in both stature and its position in Hyundai's SUV family.
For 2020, the Creta sees the addition of headlights that bring it in line with the funky Kona. Not only that, but the SUV adopts the automaker's newest facia design. The design language around it includes a wider grille, thin headlight design with daytime-running LEDs, and a bulky front bumper.
Inside, the dashboard and interior layouts adopt a new, minimalistic style. The steering wheel now has silver inserts beneath the controls, while the bottom-end is completely flat. The multimedia system has now been incorporated into the centre console, with the surfaces looking far smoother than before. Like the Kona, the stitching on the seats and steering wheel, as well as the air vents, can now be had in the same colour as the exterior.
Engine and gearbox
Hyundai still offers its Creta with three engines - two petrol, one diesel. On the petrol front, a new 1.5-litre enters as the entry-point to the new lineup. It offers 85kW and 144Nm and is mated to either a six-speed manual or new CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), which Hyundai calls Intelligent Variable Transmission. A turbocharged 1.4-litre engine acts as the range-topper and is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. This engine offers 103kW and 242Nm.
Hyundai replaced the Creta's 1.6-litre diesel engine with a new 1.5-litre turbodiesel motor - the same unit that does duty in the Creta's cousin, the Kia Seltos. This engine offers 85kW of power and a beefy 250Nm. The engine is only fitted with a six-speed automatic gearbox.
