According to High Street Auctions, after a five-month treasure hunt that took thousands of man hours through fields, dim and dusty barns, assorted workshops and rambling farmhouses to collate all the sale items, the highly-anticipated catalogue for next month’s historic 100 000-item automobilia, vintage and classic car auction taking place just outside Cape Town, has been launched for buyers to view.

Earlier in September,Wheels24 reported on a private collection of 70 rare classic cars and more than 100 000 spare parts were found in Stellenbosch and will go under the hammer on 9 November 2019.

Some of the rarest

Enthusiasts can feats their eyes on a plethora of trucks, sedans, compacts and a variety of convertibles. The oldest motor vehicle going under the hammer is a 1928 Buick.

"We got to the stage of having collected, collated and sorted the thousands upon thousands of auction items across three vast barns and we were in the process of finalising the sale lots when we happened upon an outbuilding which we’d understood to be empty," says Stef Olivier, South Africa’s 2018 Champion Auctioneer and MD of Bidway Auction House.

Classics on show

High Street Auctions Lead Auctioneer and Director, Joff van Reenen says the sale will start at 10.30am on Nassau Farm, Polkadraai Road in Stellenbosch.

"First on the block will be the no-reserve barn finds vehicles, followed by the staggering assortment of spares and parts for dozens of different makes and models of vehicles from the 1930s to the 1970s," he says.

"The incredible collection of restored classic and vintage runners will be the final lots to go under the hammer on the day.

"The spares were first grouped by decade, then by manufacturer/model and type. By way of example, one of most abundant things we’ve found on the farm is hubcaps from vehicles that span five decades," van Reenen added.

Worldwide attention

"We first grouped them according to decade from the early 1930s to the 1970s, then they were sorted by manufacturer, which means one lot will theoretically contain all the 1940s Ford hubcaps in the collection."

"We are being flooded with enquiries and registrations for the auction from all over South Africa, and also from bidders as far afield as the US, England, Switzerland and Germany," says van Reenen.
