• BMW unveils new iX model. It was first seen as a iNEXT concept.

• The SUV boast two electric motors producing over 370kW.

• The iX has a range of more than 480km, BMW says.

The BMW iX is the brand's flagship electric vehicle and what you're seeing is the full production version that BMW says will only go into production in 2021.

Electric-powered SUVs are all the rage in the automotive sector and this is BMW's fighter. The carmaker says it’s "comparable with the X5 in length and width, and is almost the same height as the X6."

The iX retains the brand's core styling motifs with the large faux kidney grille flanked by aggresive-looking LED headlights.

What's it powered by and how much range does it have?

The fifth generation eDrive technology – which encompasses the two electric motors, the power electronics, the charging technology and the high-voltage battery – develops a maximum output of more than 370kW.

This translates into a 0 to 100km/h in under five seconds.

BMW reckons the high-voltage battery will offer more than 480 kilometres  of range and a consume less than 21 kWh per 100 kilometres.

BMW says the iX is able to fast charge via a DC at up to 200 kW and claims charging from 10 to 80% capacity will take less than 40 minutes.

The interior is designed like a lounge

Inside, the designers stripped down the displays and controls to the essentials. It has more 'need than want' approach.

BMW says the interior design conveys a sense of safety and familiarity and engenders a new type of bond between occupants and vehicle.

The 'shy tech' approach for the interior can be seen in a number of features, including speakers integrated out of sight, intricately styled air vents, heated surfaces and the discreet recessing of the head-up display's projector into the instrument panel so it is almost invisible.

"The BMW iX offers a mobile living space in which people will feel at ease and the car’s intelligence is always available without becoming obtrusive," says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design.

The iX boasts a hexagonally-shaped steering wheel, a rocker switch for gear selection and the brand's 'curved display' – which forms part of the next-generation operating system.
