Mercedes-Benz launched a raft of new SUVs in the South African market, including its luxury-driven GLS. Dubbed the 'S-Class of SUVs', the new GLS offers more space, comfort and luxury than any of its predecessors. The SUV has a 60mm longer wheelbase for increased interior space, while not forsaking off-road capabilities, says Mercedes.

Bar the GLS 63 4Matic+, the line-up consists of two models: the GLS 400d 4Matic and GLS 580 4Matic. The latter features a new electrified V8 petrol engine with a 48V on-board electrical system and integrated starter-generator.

Johannes Fritz, co-CEO for Mercedes-Benz South Africa and executive director for Mercedes-Benz Cars South Africa, says: "The new GLS is the S-Class of premium SUVs. It embodies luxury, confidence and intelligence like no other vehicle. In addition, it is the market leader in its segment - just like the S-Class sedan."

Engine line-ups

The GLS 580 4M is powered by a 4.0-litre V8 engine that produces 360kW and 700Nm. Thanks to the additional electric power, power will, temporarily, be increased by 16kW/250Nm for short bursts of power. The GLS 400d 4M is driven by a 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder engine, good for 243kW and 700Nm. Fuel consumption is rated at as low as 7.6-litres/100km.

Both engines are turbocharged and mated to a nine-speed automatic gearbox.

The GLS comes with the enhanced AIRMATIC air suspension system with Adaptive Damping System Plus fitted as standard. This setup, says Mercedes-Benz, adapts the damping characteristics to the road condition and driving situation in real-time. All components have been enhanced compared with the previous generation, and the wheel suspension mountings have been optimised to maximise ride comfort. In addition to this, the air suspension keeps the car at the same level, regardless of the load on board.
