Ever since he quit Formula 1 at the end of the 2016 season, Nico Rosberg has been quite a busy man. His involvements cover a variety of fields, but he has predominantly been involved with bringing about a green future.
Rosberg, the 2016 F1 champion, has his finger in several 'green' projects, including Formula E - the all-electric racing series that stands opposite F1. A bit ironic, actually, given that Rosberg is a regular F1 commentator for SkySports F1. Anyways…
Before the Eifel Grand Prix, held at the Nurburgring, got underway, Rosberg got a special go in the fastest electric sports car in the world: the Volkswagen ID.R. And yes, the entire experience was filmed.
The ID.R is Volkswagen's first attempt at producing an all-electric sports car. And, if we might add, it's a damn impressive car - on paper, at least. Sporting two electric motors on each axle, the car has a total power output of 507kW and 650Nm. The ID.R is light, too, tipping the scales at under 1100kg (with driver).
Couple the insane amount of power and low weight to an all-wheel-drive system, and the ID.R is capable of clearing the 0-100km/h sprint in 2.25 seconds. Romain Dumas, the driver who has spent the most amount of time behind this car's steering wheel, said that VW achieved a best sprint time of 1.65sec!
The ID.R also has several records to its name, including setting a blistering time around the full-length Nürburgring in 2019. Piloted by Dumas, the ID.R set a time of 6:05.336 around the 21km track - a record that is yet to be beaten.
Volkswagen's ID.R is a clear indication of where the automaker is heading with its product portfolio. With hybridization and electrification becoming a lot more mainstream than in recent years, it should not come as too much of a surprise seeing VW setting the world alight with the ID.R over the last couple of years.
While the ID.R might not be produced for the masses, it gives a pretty good indication of what we can expect from sports cars in future. And the future is electric.
