Lewis Hamilton clinches his seventh F1 title in Turkey, equals Michael Schumacher's record

Lewis Hamilton has become the sport's most successful driver on Sunday at the Turkish Grand Prix after securing his seventh world title, equaling Michael Schumacher's record.

After one of the Mercedes' poorest performances in a race weekend, Hamilton only qualified sixth fastest on Saturday during qualifying and team mate Valtteri Bottas was ninth fastest in horrid conditions. All drivers struggled immensely to find any traction on the wet and slippery track.

The Istanbul Park circuit was also resurfaced as officials felt it was time for the weathered track to get some fresh asphalt, however, this only added to the drivers' woes.



Hamilton bagged the title after Bottas was unable to secure eight points or more, which would have prevented the Briton from grabbing his seventh title in Turkey. If he had, Bottas would have also had to win all three of the remaining races of the 2020 season. 

Before the race, Hamilton led the championship by 85 points over Bottas. 

Hamilton also equalled Schumacher's record of 92 race wins earlier in October. 

The British driver managed his tyres incredibly well after struggling with grip all weekend, even lapping team mate Bottas towards the end.
