The second practice session for this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix was almost washed out when torrential downpours descended on the track. It more than an hour for drivers to take to the track, but at the end of the session it was Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel who set the fastest time.

At the end of the session, only 13 drivers had set a lap time with the remaining seven waiting for the final minutes before venturing out onto the track. Some did not bother setting a time in the atrocious conditions.

But for Ferrari, Vettel's time will be a welcome encouragement, even if the car is nowhere near a competitive level to challenge Mercedes and Red Bull at the front. Just 0.2 seconds slower than Vettel was the Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas.

Difficult conditions

The first practice session took place in the dry, but in a matter of hours, the weather gods played their part. The first hour saw virtually no action, with only the two Racing Point cars and Kimi Raikkonen's Alfa Romeo attempting to set times.

Changing between the full-wet and intermediate tyres, the three drivers tried to get one up over the rain, but their attempts were fruitless in no small degree. Once the conditions improved, more drivers ventured on track.

In the closing stages of the session, Bottas ventured onto the track to go second fastest.
