26 September 14:12

Lap 5/53: Hamilton (sixth) was 0.9 seconds slower than Verstappen (15th) on the last lap.

26 September 14:16

Verstappen passes Leclerc for 12th, benefitting from the Leclerc/Vettel battle.

26 September 14:24

Lap 12/53: Norris telling his McLaren crew that his left front tyre is almost gone.

26 September 14:25

Lap 13/53: Lance Stroll opts to pit, attempting the undercut over their on-track rivals. He rejoins in 15th place.

26 September 14:27

Russell pits, but rejoins behind Stroll. The undercut seems to be working.

26 September 14:28

Sainz enters the pits at the end of lap 14. Can he cover Stroll and rejoin ahead of the Aston Martin driver? He does!

26 September 14:29

McLaren has to react and bring in their driver if they want to challenge for the win. The undercut seems to be working.

26 September 14:32

Lap 17/53: Verstappen just set the fastest lap of the race on tyres that are 17 laps old.

26 September 14:35

Karun Chandhok: "Max Verstappen's been to Lewis Hamilton's school of acting" after the Red Bull driver complains about wear on his left front tyre, after setting the fastest lap of the second.

26 September 14:36

Sergio Perez is less than a second behind Hamilton. He will want to pass the Mercedes man soon and give his teammate a little hand.

26 September 14:41

Lap 22/53: Spots of rain in the pitlane...

26 September 14:43

Lap 23/53: Daniel Ricciardo has a long pit stop. How will this impact his race? He is now down in 14th place.

26 September 14:45

Norris leads from the front and is a healthy 12 seconds ahead of Hamilton.

26 September 14:45

Lap 25/53: Hamilton sets the fastest lap of the race having been released by Ricciardo.

26 September 14:46

Ricciardo now sets the fastest lap of the race. He is now up in 13th place.

26 September 14:49

Lap 27/53: Hamilton and Verstappen pit and rejoin in ninth and 12th, respectively.

26 September 14:52

Norris pits at the end of lap 29. And he's out again!

26 September 14:53

Sergio Perez leads the race, followed by Fernando Alonso and Charles Leclerc. All three drivers are yet to pit.

26 September 14:54

Hamilton passes Sainz for sixth place and is charging down on Gasly who is currently in fifth place.

26 September 14:55

And Hamilton passes Gasly for the fifth place. If Toto Wolff is correct, Hamilton could still win the race.

26 September 14:57

Lap 32/53: Norris (4th) is eight seconds ahead of Hamilton. With the leading trio still to pit, these two are effectively the race leaders.

26 September 15:10

Lap 39/53: Leclerc's Ferrari engineer tells him that they're expecting rain in the closing stages of the race.

26 September 15:11

Norris leads by just 1.9sec from Hamilton. Sainz is in third place.

26 September 15:15

Lap 42/53: Leclerc passes Russell for ninth place.

26 September 15:17

Russell telling his team that there are spots of rain at Turn 10.

26 September 15:21

The rain is coming down on the track. It might not be intense, but fans in the stands have taken out their umbrellas.

26 September 15:22

Lap 47/53: "Get the Inters ready." Carlos Sainz gives the call to Ferrari.

26 September 15:25

It's a gamble! Drivers diving into the pits for a set of new Intermediate tyres.

26 September 15:26

Five laps remaining: Hamilton ignores team radio to enter the pits, while Stroll pushes teammate Vettel to the left and into the barriers. Both survive.

26 September 15:41

Lewis Hamilton wins in Russia! The rain had the final say, but it was an entertaining race, nonetheless.

26 Sep

Thanks for tuning in today and we'll see you then. Now, time for a lie-down...

26 Sep

Their titanic battle and this insane, incredible campaign will continue in Turkey in two weeks time, and we'll be covering it all here.

26 Sep

All of that madness has returned the lead of the championship to Hamilton, but Verstappen is only two points behind.

26 Sep

This season just keeps on delivering, doesn't it?

26 Sep

And breathe...

26 Sep

The full result: Hamilton, Verstappen, Sainz, Ricciardo, Bottas, Alonso, Norris, Raikkonen, Perez, Russell, Stroll, Vettel, Gasly, Ocon, Leclerc, Giovinazzi, Tsunoda, Mazepin. Did not finish: Latifi, Schumacher.

26 Sep

Kimi somehow ends up in P8 on his return, with Perez and Russell completing the top 10.

26 Sep

It's P6 for Alonso and a heartbreaking P7 for Norris, who would have won if not for the rain.

26 Sep

Sainz comes home just ahead of Ricciardo and Bottas.

26 Sep

Verstappen crosses the line in P2!

26 Sep

Hamilton wins his 100th Formula 1 race!

26 Sep

Final lap...

26 Sep

Hamilton, Verstappen, Sainz now the top three.

26 Sep

Norris pits and comes out in P7. That's gutting for him.

26 Sep

Somehow, Verstappen is going to finish P2!

26 Sep

The McLaren man tried to make it to the end but it just got too wet.

26 Sep

Norris goes off! He's down to P2!

26 Sep

It is so so wet now.

26 Sep

Perez gets back ahead of Alonso! Chaos everywhere!

26 Sep

If Norris pits now, he'll drop behind Hamilton.

26 Sep

Alonso is mastering these conditions and is up to P3!!

26 Sep

Hamilton does too! Norris stays out!

26 Sep

Verstappen, Sainz and Ricciardo pit!

26 Sep

Loads of cars going off but Norris and Hamilton are staying on track somehow!

26 Sep

DRS disabled!

26 Sep

Drivers are coming into the pits!

26 Sep

Hamilton is struggling and has dropped back massively!

26 Sep

Perez passes Sainz!

26 Sep

Norris goes wide but Hamilton can't quite get ahead!

26 Sep

Sainz is tell his team to get ready to put him on inters. Surely he won't get wet enough for that...

26 Sep

Umbrellas are going up in the stands! The rain is here, but not too hard at the moment.

26 Sep

Rain is falling hard over the Black Sea. Will the wind blow those clouds to the circuit?

26 Sep

Perez passes Ricciardo to take P4. Can he catch Sainz?

26 Sep

It's back up to 1.1 seconds now. Norris is just about doing enough.

26 Sep

Hamilton is within DRS range now.

26 Sep

Some teams are expecting rain in the last few laps...

26 Sep

1.6 seconds between Norris and Hamilton. It's looking good for the McLaren man...

26 Sep

Ricciardo is struggling with pace though and has fallen behind Sainz, with Perez now all over him.

26 Sep

He's just set the fastest lap of the race, which bodes well...

26 Sep

14 laps to go... Can Norris hold on to take his first win?

26 Sep

Alonso passes Verstappen on fresh tyres!

26 Sep

1.9 seconds between Norris and Hamilton now...

26 Sep

Checo would have been in P3 on fresh tyres if he had a good pit. That could have cost him a win...

26 Sep

Perez pits and it's a shocker of a stop! 8.9 seconds! He comes out in P5 between Ricciardo and Verstappen.

26 Sep

Ricciardo and Verstappen are stuck behind Sainz and struggling to get ahead.

26 Sep

Leclerc finally pits after a monster stint and comes out down in P13 just ahead of Bottas.

26 Sep

He passes Leclerc on the back straight.

26 Sep

Hamilton is only 4.5 seconds behind Norris now.

26 Sep

Perez will come out less than 10 seconds behind Hamilton on much, much fresher tyres as it stands. He could win this.

26 Sep

Norris passes Leclerc to take P3. That's a big move.

26 Sep

Schumacher becomes the first retirement of the day, pulling into the pits with a mechanical issue.

26 Sep

Verstappen does the same.

26 Sep

Ricciardo dives down the inside to pass Stroll.

26 Sep

Hamilton now passes Gasly. Next up on the road for him is Norris, who is eight seconds ahead and on fresher tyres.

26 Sep

Wolff: "Lewis you can win this race."

26 Sep

Hamilton is flying now. He's already passed Sainz and Stroll.

26 Sep

Perez now leads. if he can make his tyres last a while longer, he'll have much fresher rubber than everyone else at the end...

26 Sep

Norris pits and this time McLaren get it right. It's a great stop and he's ahead of everyone who has already pitted pretty comfortably.

26 Sep

The Dutchman passes Russell.

26 Sep

Hamilton and Verstappen both pit! They come out in P9 and P12, with Ricciardo and Russell splitting them.

26 Sep

The issue for Verstappen is that he has to go on to the medium tyres next. If he did so now, he'd struggle to make them last to the end.

26 Sep

Ricciardo gets ahead of Ocon quickly and is now catching Sainz, Stroll and Russell ahead of him.

26 Sep

Verstappen is really struggling with his tyres now and has dropped back a bit.

26 Sep

It was all just going too well for McLaren...

26 Sep

Ricciardo pits and it's a really poor stop! He's lost a lot of places and is now behind Ocon.

26 Sep

Perez is starting to put the pressure on Hamilton now...

26 Sep

Hamilton: "Get ready to undercut him."

26 Sep

The Aussie is doing a stellar job for his team-mate at the moment. With him holding up those behind him, Norris has a lead of almost 10 seconds.

26 Sep

If Hamilton can't get ahead of Ricciardo, he'll have two Red Bulls to deal with soon.

26 Sep

Verstappen is the fastest man on track and is quickly catching the leaders...

26 Sep

Verstappen and Leclerc are both ahead of Vettel now and in P6 and P7. Neither have pitted yet though.

26 Sep

All of those who have already come in are going to struggle with their tyres later on...

26 Sep

Sainz comes in and comes out just ahead of Stroll. Norris needs to come in soon.

26 Sep

Russell pits and comes out behind Stroll! Aston Martin have pulled off the undercut perfectly there.

26 Sep

Norris takes the lead! He passes Sainz on the straight!

26 Sep

Stroll the first of the frontrunners to pit, with him rejoining in P15.

26 Sep

He's lost some pace now and says his front left tyre is "completely gone."

26 Sep

Norris has his first look at Sainz but can't pull off a move.

26 Sep

Leclerc goes wide fighting Vettel and Verstappen goes past. The Dutchman made slight contact with the Ferrari man.

26 Sep

The McLaren is starting to put pressure on the Ferrari now...

26 Sep

Norris has closed the gap at the front by over half a second in the last few laps.

26 Sep

That was a virtually non-existent defence from Bottas there. Strange...

26 Sep

Verstappen dives down the inside to pass Bottas!

26 Sep

Perez and Verstappen are now all over Hamilton and Bottas respectively. This could be fun...

26 Sep

At the front, Sainz looks comfortable. His lead is 1.7 seconds.

26 Sep

Hamilton is struggling to get past Ricciardo, who is being helped by some DRS from Stroll.

26 Sep

Perez moves past Alonso and is now close behind Hamilton.

26 Sep

Bottas and Verstappen are up to P15 and P17.

26 Sep

Hamilton takes Alonso at Turn 4 to move up to P6.

26 Sep

Stroll had a great start and is in P4 just behind Russell now.

26 Sep

Alonso got P5 from Ricciardo but the Aussie takes it back with a great move.

26 Sep

Hamilton has made a shocking start! He's down to P7!

26 Sep

And we're off! Norris makes a good start but Sainz gets ahead before the first turn!

26 Sep

McLaren tell Norris light rain will hit the track in five minutes...

26 Sep

The formation lap is underway, with rain very visible on the horizon. My oh my.

26 Sep

Bottas, Leclerc and Verstappen start on hards, as do Giovinazzi, Gasly, Perez and Alonso. Mediums for everybody else.

26 Sep

Five minutes until the formation lap begins...

26 Sep

In terms of strategy, every driver can start on whichever tyre they like as qualifying was in the wet. If things stay dry today, expect one-stop races, with the faster cars at the back probably starting on the hard compound and going long before switching

26 Sep

Given that, don't be surprised to see a different leader after Turn 1. With their Mercedes engines and nice tow from the front two, Russell and Hamilton will both fancy their chances.

26 Sep

One interesting thing to note is that in only two of the races here since 2014 has the pole-sitter gone on to win. Indeed, with the 900 metre run down to the first corner, staying ahead is far from easy.

26 Sep

Oh, and in case that's not exciting enough, the chance of rain is also steadily rising... It's currently at 60%.

26 Sep

Why are Bottas, Leclerc and Verstappen all at the back of the field? Grid penalties incurred by engine changes. Yeah, like I said, a rather weird starting grid...

26 Sep

The full starting grid: Norris, Sainz, Russell, Hamilton, Ricciardo, Alonso, Stroll, Perez, Ocon, Vettel, Gasly, Tsunoda, Raikkonen, Schumacher, Mazepin, Giovinazzi, Bottas, Latifi, Leclerc, Verstappen.

26 Sep

Esteban Ocon and Sebastian Vettel complete the top 10.

26 Sep

In P7 and P8 are former team-mates Lance Stroll and Sergio Perez. Given the Mexican has a faster car than all but one driver ahead of him and has done well at Sochi in the past, he's one to keep an eye on for sure.

26 Sep

On the third row of the grid are Daniel Ricciardo and Fernando Alonso, both of whom are known to be rather punchy on opening laps...

26 Sep

Perhaps an even bigger shock is the fact that George Russell is starting just behind them in P3. As if that's not interesting enough, he has future team-mate, Lewis Hamilton, alongside him.

26 Sep

Lando Norris will start on pole for the first time in his F1 career after a stunning lap in the rain yesterday, and joining him on the front row is his best bud, Carlos Sainz.

26 Sep

With an hour to go, let's run through the starting grid. It's a weird one...

26 Sep

Hello and welcome to the Sochi Autodrom ahead of the Russian Grand Prix. The race gets underway at 1500 local time and all the live build-up is coming your way from 1400 local. Join us then, folks!

25 Sep

Hamilton goes purple in the first two sectors as he ends Q1 on top. Verstappen, Mazepin, Giovinazzi, Schumacher and Raikkonen are eliminated.

25 Sep

Bottas has knocked Perez off top spot by 0.059s.

25 Sep

Perez has a spin down at Turn 2. Fortunately, he has escaped to battle on in qualifying.

25 Sep

Three minutes remain. Verstappen will be eliminated. Mazepin, Giovinazzi, Schumacher and Raikkonen need a better lap to make Q2.

25 Sep

Perez pops up to P1 with a 1:46.455. Red Bull need him to play spoiler against Mercedes this afternoon.

25 Sep

Nicholas Latifi is flying for Williams up in P4.

25 Sep

Alonso, as expected, has now made the switch to intermediates.

25 Sep

Verstappen is out of the car and down in P20, so there is an extra opportunity for someone to make Q2.

25 Sep

Mercedes have wrestled back control now as Hamilton moves into the 1:46s. Bottas is P2.

25 Sep

We have our first spinner, Antonio Giovinazzi at the Turn 16 exit. Bravo Leclerc for his avoiding action there.

25 Sep

Alonso is well off the pace on his full wet tyres, as is Verstappen on the inters, though he will not mind since he will drop to the back of the grid anyway. We may not see much more of the Dutchman in Q1.

25 Sep

An early 1:50.2 for Leclerc takes him into P1. These opening laps could be crucial with more rain in the area.

25 Sep

We have drizzle in the air again.

25 Sep

Fernando Alonso has opted for the full wets.

25 Sep

It is intermediate tyres for these early ventures out onto the track.

25 Sep

Q1 begins! We were not expecting that just a few hours ago.

25 Sep

Just a few minutes to go now until Q1 begins. The skies have dried and the standing water on-track has been brushed away by the marshals.

25 Sep

This is a fantastic opportunity for the other Ferrari of Carlos Sainz though to spring a surprise, while McLaren, Alpine and AlphaTauri may also fancy their chances. Aston Martin could be a contender too - they have been looking handy around Sochi.

25 Sep

Remember Red Bull's Max Verstappen will drop to the back of the grid after taking a fourth new power unit of the season. The same fate is coming the way of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. How much will they risk it out there in the damp conditions?

25 Sep

"It could even be dry by Q3," Red Bull boss Christian Horner hopes if we get qualifying underway on time, which is looking likely.

25 Sep

Weather models show another downpour on its way to the track, but there is a good chance that qualifying can be completed before that arrives.

25 Sep

Friday practice belonged to Valtteri Bottas as the Finn headed a Mercedes one-two in both sessions. But now that the track is damp for the first time this weekend, how will that change the order?

25 Sep

FP3 was abandoned before the light went green as torrential rain, thundering and lightning descended on the Sochi Autodrom, but the sun is out now and hopes are high that Q1 can get underway. Then we just need the rain to stay away.

25 Sep

Hello and welcome back to Sochi, and the next attempt to get some action underway. All times are local.

25 Sep

Russell makes it into Q3! Leclerc, Latifi, Tsunoda, Gasly and Vettel miss out on the final stage of qualifying.

25 Sep

Hamilton extends his buffer over Bottas at the top to 0.377s.

25 Sep

Latifi has now taken to the track.

25 Sep

With a fourth and final new set of inters bolted on, Russell improves to P11, but needs to go faster still to make Q3.

25 Sep

Hamilton snatches P1 back from his team-mate. Norris is the closest threat to Mercedes right now, yet 0.848s back.

25 Sep

At the other end of the standings, Leclerc and Latifi have not set a time, and are not likely to with grid penalties coming. Tsunoda, Russell and Ricciardo are also in the elimination zone.

25 Sep

Now Bottas has hooked it up. P1 for the Finn as he comfortably enters the 1:45s. It is a 1:45.506.

25 Sep

Norris briefly pops up to P1, but Hamilton soon takes top spot for himself with a 1:46.096. Bottas meanwhile has to rejoin through the bollards after an off at Turn 2.

25 Sep

Gasly is already 1.2seconds up on his best Q1 time. The track is drying out nicely.

25 Sep

The stewards have noted an incident between Ricciardo and Stroll, with Stroll complaining that the McLaren driver had blocked him during Q1.

25 Sep

That rain appears to have passed as Q2 gets underway.

25 Sep

Latifi has also taken a fresh power unit, so he will join Verstappen and Leclerc in dropping to the back of the Russian GP grid.

25 Sep

Well, thank you Sochi! What a grid it has delivered. We could yet have further rain for Sunday's race, but either way, we are set up for a thrilling Russian Grand Prix. Make sure to join us tomorrow for that.

25 Sep

A sensational P3 for Russell, he will be joined on the second row by Hamilton. Ricciardo P5, Alonso P6, Bottas P7, Stroll P8, Perez P9 and Ocon P10 completes the top-half of the Russian Grand Prix grid.

25 Sep

Norris is on pole position for the first time in his Formula 1 career, Sainz will join him on the front row for the Russian Grand Prix.

25 Sep

POLE LANDO NORRIS! HAMILTON HAS SPUN! RUSSELL P3! Madness!

25 Sep

Hamilton is struggling, he will not improve.

25 Sep

Sainz has found it though. Provisional pole for the Ferrari driver!

25 Sep

"I can't get temperature," Hamilton reports.

25 Sep

A 1:55.0 for Russell. Some big track evolution is needed for these soft tyres to deliver.

25 Sep

The provisional pole sitter heads back out, but there could be suspension damage.

25 Sep

Hamilton has hit the wall of the pit lane! Three minutes to go as Mercedes try to fit a new front wing.

25 Sep

Russell is slipping about all over the place, but off he goes on his flying lap.

25 Sep

Sainz is in for soft slick tyres as well, as is Norris.

25 Sep

In comes Russell, it is a brand new set of red-walled soft tyres.

25 Sep

It is provisional pole for Hamilton on a 1:44.050, 0.66s clear of Bottas. Norris puts himself P2 for McLaren.

25 Sep

"Prep the slicks," says Russell. Here we go.

25 Sep

The track goes green as Mercedes lead the way on inters. Can anyone deny the Black Arrows a front-row lockout?

25 Sep

"Some tricky decisions coming up shortly," says McLaren principal Andreas Seidl as he is asked about the possibility of slick tyres in Q3. For the start of the session that surely will be a risk too great to take.

24 Sep

The full result from FP1: Bottas, Hamilton, Verstappen, Leclerc, Vettel, Gasly, Sainz, Norris, Perez, Alonso, Ocon, Stroll, Giovinazzi, Ricciardo, Raikkonen, Tsunoda, Russell, Latifi, Mazepin, Schumacher.

24 Sep

Behind them, Ferrari look strongest, while McLaren haven't had the best session. What's more, Norris just had a spin on the way back to the pits.

24 Sep

It's been a morning of very few surprises, with Mercedes locking out the front row just ahead of Verstappen.

24 Sep

That's that for the first session of the weekend.

24 Sep

On those runs, the hard tyre seems to be lasting quite a while. As usual, it will be a one-stop race here for most if things stay dry.

24 Sep

Most are doing longer runs with higher fuel loads now.

24 Sep

Perez is a driver who has enjoyed a lot of success here in the past, standing on the podium for Force India, so you'd expect him to be a little higher than P9, where he currently is.

24 Sep

Vettel is having a good morning, currently sitting pretty in P5.

24 Sep

Verstappen improves, going purple in the last two sectors, but he can't beat the Mercedes drivers due to time lost in the first. He's two tenths off Bottas.

24 Sep

A brief Virtual Safety Car comes out due to a piece of debris on track but a rapid marshall quickly clears it.

24 Sep

Ferarri are looking a lot stronger than McLaren this morning, occupying P3 and P6 with Norris and Ricciardo in P9 and P12. After the result in Monza, the Italian team need a good result here.

24 Sep

The vast majority of the drivers are on the soft tyre now.

24 Sep

Hamilton goes within two tenths of his team-mate while Leclerc takes P3.

24 Sep

Bottas has put on the softest compound himself and goes fastest on them, just over a second up on Verstappen.

24 Sep

It's interesting that Red Bull have decided to send Verstappen out on softs immediately. They're presumably expecting rain to hit hard tomorrow.

24 Sep

The Dutchman goes purple on his second lap, going three and a half tenths faster than anyone.

24 Sep

Verstappen's first lap, on the soft tyre, is just under a second slower than Bottas's.

24 Sep

Hamilton makes it a Mercedes 1-2.

24 Sep

Bottas takes top spot himself with a 1:36.412.

24 Sep

Hamilton improves to go P2, 0.171s off the lead.

24 Sep

On those softs, the Monegasque goes top with a 1:36.708, four tenths faster than Bottas.

24 Sep

Everyone except Verstappen is out on track, with Leclerc the only man on softs.

24 Sep

Perez, on hards, goes top early on before Hamilton goes two tenths faster on the same tyre.

24 Sep

The Ferraris are the first drivers out. One of them, Charles Leclerc, is running a new engine this weekend and will therefore start from the back of the grid.

24 Sep

We're underway.

24 Sep

Given that it could be wet throughout the day tomorrow, teams will want to get as much running on the dry tyres as possible today.

24 Sep

A big talking point ahead of this weekend has been rain, with the paddock flooding earlier this week. Things are dry this morning though, although the forecast suggests things won't stay that way tomorrow.

24 Sep

Making his way through the field wouldn't be easier either, especially if McLaren are as strong here as they are in Monza. Given their straight-line speed, expect them to be right up there.

24 Sep

Their task will be made easier by the fact that Max Verstappen has a three-place grid penalty for his role in the incident between himself and Hamilton in Monza. He could even end up starting from the very back of the field if Red Bull decide to change hi

24 Sep

Mercedes head into it as big favourites given they've won here every single year since it was added to the calendar in 2014. Anything less than doing so again would be a big disappointment for Lewis Hamilton and co.

24 Sep

The first practice session of the weekend will begin in just under 30 minutes.

24 Sep

Welcome to Sochi for round 15 of the 2021 F1 World Championship, the Russian Grand Prix.

24 Sep

Thanks for tuning in today and see you then.

24 Sep

Just when the next session of the weekend will be is somewhat unclear with a huge amount of rain expected all day tomorrow, but FP3 is scheduled to start at noon local time, so join us then to see what's happening.

24 Sep

The full result from FP1: Bottas, Hamilton, Gasly, Norris, Ocon, Verstappen, Sainz, Alonso, Vettel, Leclerc, Perez, Raikkonen, Russell, Giovinazzi, Stroll, Latifi, Ricciardo, Tsunoda, Mazepin, Schumacher.

24 Sep

Things don't look great for Red Bull, with Verstappen starting from the back of the grid regardless and Perez way off the pace today.

24 Sep

The rest of the top five is somewhat less expected, with Gasly just ahead of Norris and Ocon.

24 Sep

Just like this morning, Bottas ended the session in P1 ahead of Hamilton. Mercedes are looking comfortable here...

24 Sep

Right at the end of the session, Gasly loses his front wing going over the sausage kerbs.

24 Sep

On the long runs, Bottas looks fastest.

24 Sep

Perez's pace will be a concern for Red Bull. He was P9 in FP1 and is only P11 now...

24 Sep

Verstappen says it's impossible to pass with his top speed. That would be a bit of a problem in the race given where he's starting it...

24 Sep

The only midfield teams with both cars in the top 10 right now are Ferrari and Alpine. That's probably a pleasant surprise for the latter.

24 Sep

We're back underway. 15 minutes to go.

24 Sep

The barrier is also going to need a big repair job, but they're making good progress on that.

24 Sep

He spun at Turn 8, like Leclerc, but unlike the Ferrari man, ended up going backwards into the barriers. The rear of his car is badly damaged.

24 Sep

Red Flag! Giovinazzi has crashed!

24 Sep

Towards the end of the qualifying simulations, Gasly goes P3, two tenths off the front. That's a good effort from the Frenchman.

24 Sep

Leclerc spins but manages to avoid the barriers and other cars, just about.

24 Sep

Ricciardo is out on track now.

24 Sep

He doesn't stay in P2 for long though as Hamilton goes just 0.44s off his team-mate.

24 Sep

Norris goes half a second faster than the Dutchman. That's more like it from McLaren, who struggled this morning.

24 Sep

Verstappen improves on the soft tyre to go P2, a second behind Bottas.

24 Sep

Hamilton has just hit one of his pit-crew pulling into the garage after accidentally hitting the brake magic button as he did in Baku. Thankfully, the mechanic is okay.

24 Sep

It's just been confirmed that Verstappen has changed his engine and will start the race from the back of the grid. Suddenly, longer runs are much more important than qualifying simulations for the Dutchman.

24 Sep

Hamilton is going extremely slowly on his cool-down lap...

24 Sep

Ricciardo is the only man yet to leave the garage as McLaren are changing his power unit. They're fitting an old one while they repair his current one tonight.

24 Sep

The Mercedes and Red Bulls are all on mediums.

24 Sep

Plenty of drivers have now split the Ferarri pair, with Bottas just ahead of Hamilton, Perez and Verstappen in P2.

24 Sep

Ferrari go P1 and P2 early on, with Leclerc on softs leading Sainz on mediums.

24 Sep

FP2 is underway.

24 Sep

Given that, expect every team to do both qualifying simulations and longer runs in the next hour.

24 Sep

This session is made all the more important by the fact that it may be the final practice of the weekend with the weather forecast suggesting tomorrow could well be a wash-out.

24 Sep

His team-mate meanwhile could only finish in P9, 1.7s off the pace set by Bottas. With Verstappen having a grid penalty, the Mexican needs to find his feet this afternoon for his team's sake.

24 Sep

Max Verstappen secured P3 and was the fastest man in the final two sectors, but he lost a lot of time to his rivals in the first.

24 Sep

This morning's session didn't throw up any surprises at the front, with Mercedes locking out the front two. Valtteri Bottas went fastest with Lewis Hamilton close behind.

24 Sep

Hello and welcome to live coverage of the second practice session of the Russian Grand Prix weekend. All times are local to Sochi.

25 Sep

So, let's hope that the rain eases and qualifying can indeed happen today. Join us again at 1430 local time as we begin the build-up, hopefully, to Q1.

25 Sep

"If qualifying isn't able to happen today, as we have seen a few times before in the past, then we will hold qualifying on Sunday morning."

25 Sep

"The determining factor this afternoon will be the light, sunset locally is about 1815, but with conditions like this light diminishes far earlier," Masi continues.

25 Sep

FIA race director Michael Masi said the current level of rain is expected until 1330-1400 local time, and then it is expected to decrease, so that bodes well for fitting qualifying in today.

25 Sep

It is a shame that we could not make an attempt to get some cars on the track, but with the rain, thunder and lightning as it is, there was no other choice really.

25 Sep

And there we go, FP3 has been cancelled! No hanging around.

25 Sep

This upcoming FP3 session though is going to be far more representative than Friday, at least for qualifying ahead with the rain set in until mid-afternoon according to the weather models, not that they have let us down this season.

25 Sep

It was advantage Mercedes in the warm, sunny conditions on Friday, with Valtteri Bottas topping both FP1 and FP2 ahead of team-mate Lewis Hamilton.

25 Sep

Just under 30 minutes to go until the session is due to get underway, but it is not looking great. The lightning around the circuit is an added hazard to the relentless rain.

25 Sep

Good morning and welcome to a soaking wet Sochi circuit.
