Sunday's inaugural Miami Grand Prix Formula One race in Miami Gardens, Fla., lived up to its billing as a heavyweight battle between the series' two points leaders - Charles Leclerc of Ferrari and Max Verstappen of Red Bull.

Verstappen came away with the victory, the second in a row for the 2021 F1 drivers' champion. His earlier wins had come in Saudi Arabia and Italy.

Either way, that incident is noted and Schumacher's hopes of first Formula 1 points here in Miami are done. He is in for a tyre and front-wing change.

Russell has let Hamilton back through, it seems he completed that pass not fully on the track so will wind up for a legitimate move. Vettel turns in on Schumacher at Turn 1 and gets a huge whack for that. "That's clearly my corner," says Schumacher.

Verstappen has turned up the engine to aid his defence against Leclerc. "Strategy has not been kind to me," says Hamilton. To be fair, Russell took the gamble and it paid off.

Perez fully sends it at Turn 1, but goes too deep and Sainz keeps P3. That will have taken a lot of life out of that front-right which he locked up.

No further investigation necessary for Magnussen and Stroll say the stewards.

Russell now has taken P5 from Hamilton. Bottas is also right on Hamilton's tail and out for vengeance after his wide moment and clip of the wall.

Russell near enough pushing Hamilton there through the tight and technical corners. Russell tries to go around the outside but Hamilton defends at the hairpin. Bottas goes wide and lets both Mercedes through.

A little bit of rain is eight minutes away say Aston Martin. Looking at the cloud in question, it looks like more than a little bit of rain in the air.

Haas have now done the swap, Schumacher is up to P12 and crucially, Vettel is still behind two Haas'. Make that a McLaren as well now after a very wide moment from Vettel.

Leclerc now with the fastest lap, and by a margin of four-tenths, but he has over 7.5 seconds to find if he is to catch Verstappen.

Schumacher was hoping for a switcheroo, but Haas do not agree at this stage and keep Magnussen ahead. It would be risky with Vettel right on Schumacher's gearbox.

Ricciardo pits, he is now P17 on hard tyres. Vettel pulls a pass on Magnussen and improves to P12.

Red Bull principal Christian Horner explained from the pit wall that it was a sensor issue for Perez, costing him 20 kilowatts, or 25 horsepower.

Verstappen takes back the fastest lap and provisionally the bonus point that comes with it. Hamilton has a very wide moment.

Leclerc pumps in a new fastest lap. Aston Martin meanwhile are rather ruining the race for Haas and Norris right now, having not yet made a stop.

Short and sweet, it is a very slow stop though for Sainz. 5.4 seconds he was stationary there. If Perez had not suffered those engine problems then, he would have been up into the podium places.

So, having not yet stopped, Sainz is leading in Miami.

Red Bull respond now with Verstappen, he switches to the hard tyre too. Just 2.4 seconds that stop!

"The car is so difficult to drive," Leclerc exclaims. How about a change of tyres then? He is in for the hard tyres.

In comes Hamilton, a tidy 2.7 second stop from the Mercedes crew.

Verstappen sets the new fastest lap of the race, he is 4.5 seconds ahead of Leclerc now.

Schumacher passes Norris now after he goes well wide, those hard tyres are not biting yet. "Fail 5 0" Perez is told. The power unit looks good again say Red Bull and Perez is now back up to speed, but it cost him about six seconds.

Oh no! Perez is losing power. He has fallen a long way back from Sainz.

Norris boxes now to ditch mediums for hard tyres. 3.6 seconds that one, a slightly tacky stop. Both Aston Martins and Magnussen quickly make overtakes.

Perez has now reeled in Sainz, he just lapped half a second faster than the Ferrari driver.

3.3-second stop for Gasly, so Alonso will need a new cunning plan to pass him.

Verstappen told he is doing a very good job of managing that front-right tyre, it is definitely advantage Red Bull at this stage.

Magnussen pulled a move on team-mate Schumacher but pits now for hard tyres.

Leclerc goes very wide at the penultimate turn, Verstappen has stretched his lead to 2.5 seconds.

Ferrari tell Sainz that they are extending this first stint as far as they can.

Russell has improved to P14 and is now right on Tsunoda's tail. Those hard tyres seem to be coming to him now. Ricciardo had passed Tsunoda as the latter's difficult start to the Miami GP continues.

DRS helps, but Red Bull's advantage in a straight line means Leclerc can not get in a position to attack into Turn 1.

Leclerc is not ready to give this up though.

Leclerc struggles badly for traction and it is Verstappen into the lead of the Miami Grand Prix at Turn 1.

Red Bull tell Verstappen that they are starting to see some damage on Leclerc's front-right tyre. He is now within a second of the leader.

Zhou Guanyu is our first retirement in Miami. He is being wheeled back into the Alfa Romeo garage.

The AlphaTauris are not having a very fun start to this race, Schumacher and Magnussen have demoted Tsunoda to P12.

But no hold-ups this time, Hamilton is through, back into P6 now for the seven-time champ.

Hamilton is adamant he has some left-rear damage though. He is now right on the back of...oh dear, Pierre Gasly. Memories of Imola are still fresh.

Hamilton did indeed get quite the tap from Alonso at the start, wheel-to-wheel contact though fortunately, so no damage for either driver.

Hamilton has undone some of that damage though, he is past Alonso and up to P7.

Alonso is the biggest gainer at the start, up four positions, Hamilton complained of Alonso hitting him at the start though over the radio.

Russell is down to P15, starting on that hard tyre did backfire.

Hamilton has had a very tricky start, he has dropped behind Gasly and Alonso.

Leclerc leads, but Sainz is muscled out by Verstappen who is up to P2.

Russell though is going to start on the hard tyre, a risk considering he is already a bit bogged down there in the midfield. The Aston Martins, Latifi and Ocon are on that compound too.

How Lewis Hamilton would love the rain to fall. A smoother qualifying this time around sees him start P6, he will be intent on quickly clearing former team-mate Bottas.

Anything could happen though this afternoon. Light rain showers continue to pass through pre-race. If any heavy ones arrive, then we could see some shock results.

Behind that Ferrari-Red Bull battle, it was a gap approaching half a second back to Valtteri Bottas, who put his Alfa Romeo an impressive P5 on the grid. He could well be in the podium conversation after showing some very strong race pace at Imola.

Sergio Perez will also have his eyes set on a first victory of the season, disappointed after qualifying but nonetheless in with a shout from P4 on the grid.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen did a remarkable job by claiming P3 on the grid, considering he missed nearly all of Friday practice, a serious amount of track time to lose at a new venue. He is very much a contender to make it back to back wins this afternoon.

Ferrari put themselves in prime position to enter the history books as the first team to win in Miami, Charles Leclerc starting from pole with Carlos Sainz P2 on the grid. But, with so many unknowns, there are surely many twists and turns to come.

So, here we go. For the first time, qualifying for the Miami Grand Prix is underway. The slowest five drivers will be eliminated in this session.

There remains a scorching track temperature of 52c, so track evolution could play a vital role in qualifying if the clouds roll in again. We also know now that this track punishes drivers for even the slightest detours off the racing line.

Williams' Nicholas Latifi also needs a big improvement in qualifying, having propped up the FP3 standings, almost a second slower than team-mate Alex Albon who was flying high up in P9.

It was not a very successful FP3 for Mercedes though. Having surprisingly set the pace in FP2, hopes that the Silver Arrows had returned to form took a hit with Lewis Hamilton managing only P15 in FP3, while George Russell was P17. Both drivers certainly

Fortunately for Alpine, Fernando Alonso has been looking very strong throughout practice, signing off in P4, seven-tenths down on Perez's FP3-topping time. Sebastian Vettel was only 0.013s slower than Alonso in a very encouraging session for Aston Martin,

Speaking of crashes, we know that Alpine's Esteban Ocon will not be taking part in qualifying after crashing out of FP3, at the same place as where Sainz came a cropper over at Turn 14.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc split the two Red Bulls, while Carlos Sainz, still looking to get back in the groove after that FP2 crash, managed only P7.

It is advantage Red Bull heading into qualifying. Sergio Perez topped FP3 as the track quickly evolved towards the end of the session, while Max Verstappen spun as he looked set to beat his team-mate's benchmark.

So that was day one in Miami. Lots to enjoy and this circuit should make the truly competitive action quite a spectacle. We'll be back on Saturday with FP3 and, of course, qualifying. Until then, sleep well and catch you then.

Apart from Mercedes, who else will be happy with their day's work? Alonso and Lando Norris mostly, you suspect. They looked the best outside of the top three teams in each session, followed by Pierre Gasly.

And that's the chequered flag. It's Russell at the top from Leclerc, who has just reported the Ferrari engine "is doing something weird in Turn 14 and 15".

Kevin Magnussen's just been off in the Haas at the same corner where Bottas hit the wall. On he goes though, and sits a very creditable 10th. A spin for Vettel too. "You're okay," says his race engineer. "Not sure the car is," replies Seb.

Verstappen's issue has been attributed to hydraulics. His running for the day is done. Meanwhile, another spin for Perez with Sebastian Vettel in close proximity, but the Mexican hot nothing and was able to continue.

Meanwhile, Mercedes are taking advantage of Ferrari and Red Bull's FP2 woes. Russell and Lewis Hamilton sit in the top three, sandwiching Leclerc, as we head towards the last 20 minutes with the leading runners now on soft tyres.

Lance Stroll was also inconvenienced and had to run off track to avoid the very slow Verstappen. The stewards have exonerated the Dutchman though.

But Verstappen has a problem. He's struggling to steer the car and just held up Fernando Alonso in the Alpine, offering an apologetic wave to the Spaniard. The car's overheating brakes are being extinguished in the pit box.
