The final part of qualifying - Q3 - is underway. Who will take pole position?

08 May 16:02

If Hamilton takes pole position today, he'll become the first F1 driver in history to achieve this feat 100 times.

08 May 16:04

Norris sets the first time in Q3: 1:18.0, but Ocon bests him to post a 1:17.580

08 May 16:04

Hamilton sets the pace with a 1:16.741

08 May 16:08

There are less than 4min remaining in the session. Expect a flurry of activity as qualifying draws to a close.

08 May 16:10

All 10 drivers are out on track.

08 May 16:11

The session is over, but all 10 Q3 participants are coming in for their final times.

08 May 16:14

Thank you for joining us. We'll see you tomorrow for the race.

09 May 14:55

Hallo and welcome to our live coverage of the 2021 Spanish Grand Prix.

09 May 15:01

It's race day! And we're just minutes away from the 2021 Spanish GP. Will Lewis Hamilton extend his win tally to 98? Or will Max Verstappen have a say in the matter?

09 May 15:04

And away we go!

09 May 15:05

What a start by Max Verstappen! Getting his elbows out against Lewis Hamilton going into Turn 1.

09 May 15:06

The top three as we end Lap 1 is Verstappen, Hamilton, and Charles Leclerc.

09 May 15:06

Verstappen already has a 1.5sec advantage over Hamilton.

09 May 15:10

Leclerc also had a beautiful pass on Bottas for 3rd place, but DRS activated, Bottas should pass the Ferrari driver imminently.

09 May 15:12

Lap 6/66: Leclerc manages to extend his lead over Bottas to 1.2sec.

09 May 15:13

Mick Schumacher is down in 17th place, but he is hounded by George Russell.

09 May 15:15

Yuki Tsunoda comes to a stop on track.

09 May 15:16

Safety Car deployed on lap 9/66 as marshals clear Tsunoda's stricken AlphaTauri.

09 May 15:18

Antonio Giovinazzi makes a pit stop, but is stationary for more than 35 seconds. The new left front tyre was flat! The team had to fit a new set on his car.

09 May 15:21

The race resumes and it's Verstappen leading from Hamilton, Verstappen and Bottas.

09 May 15:28

Lap 16/66: The gap between Verstappen and Hamilton is 1.1sec

09 May 15:40

Mistake! Red Bull falters during Max Verstappen's pit stop. He was stationary for an extra 2 seconds.

09 May 15:45

George Russell is currently in 7th place, but he is yet to pit.

09 May 15:46

Hamilton exits the pits, but he is 6sec behind Verstappen. However, Hamilton's tyres are 5 laps fresher than Verstappen's.

09 May 15:51

Lap 33/66: Sergio Perez is on Daniel Ricciardo's tail, looking to pass the McLaren driver.

09 May 15:52

We've passed half-race distance. Verstappen leads from Hamilton, Bottas, and Leclerc.

09 May 16:05

Verstappen saying over the radio that the Merc's grip is shocking.

09 May 16:05

Curveball! Hamilton pits again - he's made his second and final stop of the race.

09 May 16:08

Had Verstappen pitted as well, he'd have rejoined the race little more than 1 second ahead of Hamilton.

09 May 16:19

13 laps to go and Hamilton is only 11 seconds behind Verstappen.

09 May 16:21

Hamilton has closed the gap to Verstappen to just 8 seconds.

09 May 16:36

We're on the final lap of the race. Lewis Hamilton leads the field from Verstappen and Bottas.

09 May 16:38

Thank you for joining us. It's been a good weekend of racing. We'll see you soon.

09 May

All of it will be covered here, so join us then. In the meantime, enjoy the weekend off. See you soon!

09 May

We've got a two-week break before we head to Monte Carlo and, as always, things will get started there with FP1 and FP2 on the Thursday.

09 May

So, four races in, Hamilton has three wins and is 14 points clear in the standings. Happy days. Next up, Monaco.

09 May

The Brit was undoubtedly excellent, but his team deserve as much if not more credit for that win. The decision to commit to a two-stop race early on was a big call, but a genius one.

09 May

Well, this is all starting to feel rather familiar. Verstappen looks well in the mix for the win early on, but ultimately the might of Mercedes and Hamilton is too strong.

09 May

The full result: Hamilton, Verstappen, Bottas, Leclerc, Perez, Ricciardo, Sainz, Norris, Ocon, Gasly, Stroll, Raikkonen, Vettel, Russell, Giovinazzi, Latifi, Alonso, Schumacher, Mazepin. RET: Tsunoda.

09 May

Norris takes P8 with Ocon and Gasly completing the top 10.

09 May

Ricciardo just about holds off Sainz to finish in P6. That was his best race yet for McLaren.

09 May

Leclerc takes an excellent P4 ahead of Perez.

09 May

Verstappen comes home in P2 with Bottas completing the podium. That finishing order is starting to feel familiar...

09 May

Lewis Hamilton wins the Spanish Grand Prix!

09 May

Final lap...

09 May

Mercedes have absolutely outclassed Red Bull today in terms of strategy. In hindsight, they really should have pitted Verstappen as soon as Hamilton came in.

09 May

Gasly passes Alonso and then Stroll to move into P10.

09 May

Verstappen takes the extra point from his team-mate.

09 May

Perez sets the fastest lap.

09 May

Stroll passes the Spaniard, who is still on his first set of tyres.

09 May

There's quite the battle for the final point of the race. Alonso is in P10 with Stroll and Gasly all over him.

09 May

Well, Red Bull gave it a good go. Verstappen now pits for some much needed fresh rubber.

09 May

Hamilton takes the lead! He catches Verstappen rapidly and cruises past around the outside at Turn 1.

09 May

Leclerc pits too.

09 May

Perez pits and will go for fastest lap.

09 May

Hamilton now 2.9 seconds behind.

09 May

Bottas passes Leclerc at Turn 1 to take back P3.

09 May

Verstappen making these tyres last to the end is an achievement in itself.

09 May

11 laps to go and Hamilton is 8.2 seconds behind Verstappen. This will be so tight.

09 May

Ricciardo and Sainz have moved up to P6 and P7 and are now free to fight amongst themselves.

09 May

Bottas pits and comes out in P4 behind Leclerc. On fresh tyres, he'll presumably catch him.

09 May

The Brit did indeed lose 0.3s to Verstappen on that last lap.

09 May

Hamilton passes the Finn but Bottas certainly didn't move aside and did hold him up. Team orders? What team orders?

09 May

Bottas has been informed that Hamilton is catching him and is on a different strategy, fighting for the win. In other words: "Let him pass, Valtteri."

09 May

Ricciardo and Sainz have both passed Norris.

09 May

Bottas was a second faster than Verstappen on the last lap and has been told to pick up the pace. Could both Mercedes drivers pass the Dutchman?

09 May

Ricciardo and Sainz pit and rejoin in P8 and P9.

09 May

Verstappen: "I don't see how we're going to make it to the end."

09 May

The gap between Verstappen and Hamilton is now down to 17 seconds.

09 May

Perez has finally managed to get past Ricciardo with an excellent move at Turn 1 around the outside. If only he could have done that 20 laps ago...

09 May

At this current pace, Hamilton will catch Verstappen on the final lap of the race.

09 May

Now, if Verstappen pits, he'll lose the lead. Staying out is his best bet surely.

09 May

He stays out.

09 May

Hamilton is 24 seconds behind with fresh mediums. If Verstappen wants to pit, he has to do it now or he'll lose the lead.

09 May

Hamilton pits! He's going for a two-stop race! Well well well, things have just got very interesting.

09 May

Hamilton is staying within DRS range now but just can't get enough of a pace advantage to pass. Oh how we wish the straight here was a tiny bit longer...

09 May

Stroll has pitted. He's the first of the top 10 to go for a two-stop race. Interesting...

09 May

If the front two can build the gap to Leclerc by around five more seconds, they may start to consider pitting again...

09 May

He's lost a bit of pace since getting into the dirty air of the leader. The gap is stable at around a second now.

09 May

Hamilton now within DRS range of Verstappen, while Mercedes think Bottas will catch the Red Bull on the last lap.

09 May

At this rate, he'll catch the Dutchman within three laps.

09 May

Hamilton was 1.4 seconds faster than Verstappen on the last lap.

09 May

The Mexican passes Kimi! If he can clear Ricciardo, things could get interesting.

09 May

Bottas has got himself back in touch with the front two, while Perez is behind Ricciardo and Raikkonen.

09 May

Hamilton comes in! He rejoins five seconds behind the leader.

09 May

Perez pits and, crucially, comes out behind Ricciardo.

09 May

Not for the first time, Hamilton and Perez are making their tyres last longer than everyone else.

09 May

That has indeed cost Hamilton. He'll come out behind Verstappen when he pits, but will have fresher tyres for the rest of the race.

09 May

Hamilton has lost time in traffic behind Mazepin and Toto Wolff has complained on the radio to Michael Masi.

09 May

Ricciardo pits which clears the way nicely for Verstappen.

09 May

Perez moves aside for Verstappen while Hamilton stays out.

09 May

He lost a bit of time in the pits, which could give Hamilton the lead if he pits now.

09 May

Verstappen pits! It's not a great stop, and he rejoins in P5.

09 May

Hamilton is catching Verstappen rapidly.

09 May

Bottas pits for mediums and comes out in P6.

09 May

Sainz and Stroll do the same with the Canadian just ahead of Alonso. Vettel meanwhile has passed Gasly.

09 May

Alonso and Vettel both pit for mediums and rejoin in P19 and P18. Gasly splits them.

09 May

Hamilton, Bottas and Perez are all just outside of DRS range to those in front of them.

09 May

These softs should only last around five more laps more.

09 May

There's a lot of DRS trains at the moment. Don't expect too many position changes until the pits.

09 May

Gasly has been given a five-second penalty. Not going well for AlphaTauri.

09 May

DRS has been enabled, and Hamilton is within a second of Verstappen...

09 May

At this rate, Bottas and Perez will have to try and get ahead of those in front of them with an undercut or overcut. Passing on track is just so difficult here.

09 May

Verstappen nails the restart to comfortably stay ahead. No position changes in the top 10.

09 May

The SC is coming in...

09 May

Giovinazzi came into the pits but a mechanic spotted that one of his new tyres was punctured before putting it on. He was therefore stationary for a while, but did get back out with inflated tyres.

09 May

Yep, the Safety Car has been deployed.

09 May

Tsunoda is out! His engine has died and he's stopped at Turn 10. That'll need a Safety Car.

09 May

Gasly had a poor start, dropping down to P13, and is under investigation for being out of position at the start...

09 May

The Mexican and Bottas are all over the back of Ricciardo and Leclerc respectively. They need to get past quickly.

09 May

Perez had a good start too, moving up to P6.

09 May

Verstappen is already pulling away from the Brit. The gap is 1.7 seconds.

09 May

Hamilton and Verstappen got even starts but the Dutchman had the inside line and didn't budge.

09 May

Bottas meanwhile lost out to Leclerc. Not a good start for Mercedes.

09 May

And we're off! Verstappen barges his way past Hamilton at the start!

09 May

The formation lap is underway. Here we go...

09 May

Kimi is the only man not doing so, starting on mediums instead.

09 May

Just a reminder that the top 10 all start on the soft tyre...

09 May

The tailwind on the straight is going to make life harder for those further back at the start. Five minutes to go...

09 May

It is also pretty windy. Certainly not the perfect conditions for the start.

09 May

On his way to the grid, Norris reports that there are a few drops of rain, but it's very light...

09 May

Can Bottas take victory? Well, only three times in the last 30 races here has someone not starting on the front row won...

09 May

Regardless of who is ahead early on, things could be decided by strategy as they so often are. Most are expected to do a simple one-stop race, but a two-stopper could be a risk worth taking. Ultimately, it depends on how the soft tyres hold up.

09 May

If Verstappen is to win today as he did in 2016, getting ahead of Hamilton at the start would do him the world of good, and at this track, it's very possible. The run down to Turn 1 is long, so a better getaway would surely carry him past his rival.

09 May

The full starting order: Hamilton, Verstappen, Bottas, Leclerc, Ocon, Sainz, Ricciardo, Perez, Norris, Alonso, Stroll, Gasly, Vettel, Giovinazzi, Russell, Tsunoda, Raikkonen, Schumacher, Latifi, Mazepin.

09 May

His job will be made harder by the fact that Ferrari, McLaren and Alpine all look very strong. Leclerc, Ocon, Sainz and Ricciardo all start ahead of Checo, with Norris and Alonso just behind. Things are going to get tasty.

09 May

Perez couldn't get involved in the fight though and starts down in P8. He's struggled all weekend, so needs to make a big step forward today if he is to help his team-mate battle the Mercedes drivers.

09 May

At the front of the grid, Hamilton claimed his 100th pole position just ahead of Verstappen and Bottas, with little to choose between the three of them throughout the day.

09 May

First things first, let's run through what happened in qualifying yesterday...

09 May

The race itself gets underway at 1500 local time with Lewis Hamilton on pole position.

09 May

Hello and welcome back to the Circuit de Catalunya-Barcelona for the Spanish Grand Prix. We will have all the race build-up from 1400 local time.

08 May 2021

With Gasly up in P5 in the other AlphaTauri, that Q1 elimination is a huge disappointment for Tsunoda. The beep machine is out as the Japanese driver reacts over the radio.

08 May 2021

Wow, that Q1 was tight...very tight! Norris tops the session, but at the other end it is Tsunoda, Raikkonen, Schumacher, Latifi and Mazepin eliminated.

08 May 2021

The stewards will investigate that queue which cost Norris dearly after the session.

08 May 2021

With four minutes to go, Mazepin, Latifi, Schumacher, Stroll and Raikkonen need to find time or they are done for the day.

08 May 2021

Norris was on a really solid lap there, purple in Sector 1, but a ridiculous traffic jam at the chicane costs him major time. P8 it is for the McLaren man.

08 May 2021

A solid lap there from Sainz on the soft rubber to go P3. Leclerc slots into P5 between Hamilton and Perez.

08 May 2021

It's Bottas on top early in Q1, Verstappen P2, Hamilton P3 and Perez a pretty distant P4. Both Mercs though are out there on the medium compounds tyres, while Red Bull have chosen the softs.

08 May 2021

First flying laps from Red Bull and Mercedes incoming...

08 May 2021

A poor first few sectors there for Russell who returns to the pits rather than finishing his lap.

08 May 2021

At last, here we go for Q1!

08 May 2021

Halfway through the delay, the drivers are in their cars and ready to go.

08 May 2021

Sadly a crash during an earlier support race means that a barrier needs fixing. So Q1 is delayed by 10 minutes.

08 May 2021

The sun is still shining bright in Barcelona. Track temperature is nudging 45c.

08 May 2021

Pirelli have just confirmed that a camera in the kerb caused Raikkonen's FP3 puncture.

08 May 2021

On the back foot though is Sergio Perez. It was another P10 in practice earlier and big improvements are needed.

08 May 2021

Keep an eye on Alfa Romeo too. Kimi Raikkonen was P9 come the end of FP3, but it felt like there was more to come after a puncture forced him back to the pits.

08 May 2021

Alpine did not show the same promise in FP3 that they had on Friday, but talk in the paddock suggests both Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon had the engine turned down. If that is the case then they may well join Ferrari in the hunt of a place on the secon

08 May 2021

And threatening to put the cat among the pigeons are Ferrari. Charles Leclerc ended practice up in P3 ahead of Carlos Sainz in P4 as they split the Mercedes. Watch out for the Scuderia!

08 May 2021

Max Verstappen takes the advantage into qualifying after topping FP3, but Lewis Hamilton is very much in the pole conversation over at Mercedes.

08 May 2021

Hello and welcome back to Barcelona. Who is ready for some qualifying action? The light will go green for Q1 in around 30 minutes. All times are local.

Both Aston Martins are out. Stroll and Vettel are joined in Q2 elimination by Gasly, Giovinazzi and Russell. Bottas cuts the deficit to Verstappen at the top to two tenths.

08 May 2021

Russell heads out for his first lap on used softs. A free hit really with little chance of Q3.

08 May 2021

Unless you are Max, nobody is comfortable here for Q3. Two tenths between P5 and P13.

08 May 2021

Verstappen goes half a second clear of Bottas. Half a second! What a lap from the Dutchman.

08 May 2021

Mercedes on to the soft rubber now and it is advantage Bottas again. A 1:17.4 puts him two tenths up on Hamilton.

08 May 2021

Q2 is underway, Leclerc does not even have the tyres on his Ferrari yet. Chilled down at the Scuderia garage.

08 May

Well then, the grid is set for what could well be a classic Spanish Grand Prix! Make sure to join us tomorrow for all the live action.

08 May

Of all the stops on the F1 calendar, Barcelona is one of those where pole matters greatly. But Verstappen and Bottas will have confidence in their chances of denying Hamilton career win number 98.

08 May

A fantastic P5 on the grid for Esteban Ocon. Sainz P6, Ricciardo P7, Perez a very disappointing P8, Norris P9 and Alonso P10 completes the Q3 order and the top half of the grid for the Spanish Grand Prix.

08 May

Verstappen will join him on the first row ahead of Bottas and Leclerc.

08 May

He's done it! Pole number 100 for Lewis Hamilton!

08 May

Advantage Hamilton, Bottas and Verstappen are not improving in the first two sectors.

08 May

Verstappen slides up the inside of a Ferrari, he wants the slipstream of Bottas up ahead.

08 May

Two minutes to go and the drivers feed back out onto the track. It's now or never!

08 May

Narrowly denied in Portimao, Hamilton is on for what would be his 100th pole position in Formula 1. Can Verstappen delay the party again?

08 May

Advantage Hamilton! Provisional pole for the Briton, but Verstappen sits just 0.03s behind.

08 May

Spinner! Sergio Perez at Turn 13, the yellow flags are out, but the Mexican gets going again.

08 May

Verstappen then is the favourite to take pole here in this final session, but both Hamilton and Bottas are waiting to spring a surprise.

08 May

It's Q3 time, no time to waste as the drivers flood out onto the track.

07 May

FP2 gets underway in just over two hours, so join us then for our continued live coverage of the weekend.

07 May

The final order in FP1: Bottas, Verstappen, Hamilton, Norris, Leclerc, Sainz, Gasly, Vettel, Perez, Stroll, Tsunoda, Ocon, Giovinazzi, Ricciardo, Alonso, Latifi, Nissany, Schumacher, Kubica, Mazepin.

07 May

Perez meanwhile could only end the morning down in P9 after failing to do a clean lap on softs.

07 May

Norris finishes in P4 with the Ferraris close behind. Given that they didn't use soft tyres, they're looking very good.

07 May

Bottas tops the session just ahead of Verstappen and Hamilton. Just over a tenth separate the top three.

07 May

That's that for FP1.

07 May

Perez looked set to go P4 before being massively slowed down by Daniel Ricciardo in the final sector. He's not happy with the Aussie.

07 May

Leclerc and Sainz go P5 and P6, just behind Norris. They're running mediums, not softs.

07 May

He finds clean air on his next one and goes P3, just behind Bottas who improved. 0.33s between them.

07 May

Verstappen hits traffic on his flying lap on soft and backs out.

07 May

Perez goes P6 on softs.

07 May

We're back underway. Eight minutes left.

07 May

12 minutes to go and the clock is ticking. This stoppage isn't ideal, especially for those yet to do quali runs.

07 May

Red Flag! Kubica is stuck in the gravel at Turn 10 and is out.

07 May

Norris goes quicker than the Frenchman. Still waiting for the Red Bulls to go out on softs...

07 May

Gasly takes P3.

07 May

Hamilton and Bottas stick on the softs too and go P1 and P2, taking us into the 1:18s.

07 May

Vettel has put on softs and immediately gone top with a 1:19.234. We're getting more qualifying runs now.

07 May

He then improves to move up to P4, just ahead of Bottas.

07 May

Perez goes P7.

07 May

After a poor Saturday last week, Alonso said his focus going forward was on improving his qualifying pace, which is probably why he is running the soft tyre.

07 May

Tsunoda goes P12 with his first time.

07 May

Kubica is standing in for Raikkonen this morning and is currently P18.

07 May

Perez and Tsunoda are the only drivers yet to set a time.

07 May

Alonso is still the only man not running hard tyres, so expect the times to come down a lot when others follow suit.

07 May

He doesn't stay there for long though as Hamilton does a 1:19.675.

07 May

Alonso is the only man on soft tyres so it's no surprise to see that he has gone fastest by four tenths.

07 May

Leclerc on the radio: "Mazpein will never change." Brutal.

07 May

Verstappen goes six tenths faster. Both are on hard tyres.

07 May

Hamilton is top early on with a 1:21.014.

07 May

Oh dear. Three minutes in, Mazepin has gone off at Turn 8. He went into the gravel but managed to get back going.

07 May

FP1 is underway.

07 May

There is one change to the circuit for this weekend, with Turn 10 being revamped. How much difference that makes remains to be seen...

07 May

One man that needs to get involved in it is Valtteri Bottas, who is coming under increasing pressure from George Russell for that second Mercedes seat, if reports are to be believed. A first win of the season would do him the world of good.

07 May

That doesn't mean that Mercedes were comfortably quicker than Red Bull though. In fact, Max Verstappen would have claimed pole position and fastest lap if he could stick to track limits. With this track being more familiar and having more grip, expect him

07 May

The lead did just change hands three times, but in truth, once Lewis Hamilton got ahead, he always looked comfortable, and never really looked like losing it.

07 May

Many say Portimao, where we last raced, is a better version of this circuit, but for the sake of this weekend, let's hope that isn't the case, because things weren't exactly thrilling in Portugal...

07 May

It's a warm sunny day in Barcelona, where FP1 will get underway in just 30 minutes.

07 May

Good morning and welcome to the Circuit de Catalunya-Barcelona, the venue for round four of the 2021 F1 World Championship, the Spanish Grand Prix.

07 May

We'll find out in qualifying at 15:00 local time after a final practice session that will get underway at noon. Join us then.

07 May

Well, day one in Barcelona is done and dusted, and Mercedes will be leaving it very happy indeed. Can Red Bull fight back tomorrow when it counts?

07 May

The full order: Hamilton, Bottas, Leclerc, Ocon, Alonso, Gasly, Tsunoda, Sainz, Verstappen, Perez, Vettel, Norris, Giovinazzi, Stroll, Ricciardo, Raikkonen, Russell, Latifi, Schumacher, Mazepin.

07 May

The same can't be said for Red Bull, with Verstappen and Perez only just making the top 10. They'll undoubtedly be quicker than that tomorrow, but it wasn't the ideal day for them.

07 May

Hamilton tops it with a 1:18.170 just ahead of Bottas. Mercedes are looking strong.

07 May

FP2 is over.

07 May

A lot of drivers are making the soft last 15-20 laps. Judging by that, we're in for a one-stop race. Hurray...

07 May

Perez's long-run pace on the softs does at least look decent. He's matching the Mercs.

07 May

Alpine on the other hand have picked up where they left off in Portugal and look to be at the top of the midfield.

07 May

McLaren really don't look quick this afternoon, with Norris and Ricciardo in P12 and P15. If they're not holding anything back, that's very surprising.

07 May

A few cars are doing longer runs on the soft tyre now. Asides from the top two teams, cars that make it to Q3 will of course probably be starting the race on them.

07 May

The top 10: Mercedes, Mercedes, Ferrari, Alpine, Alpine, AlphaTauri, AlphaTauri, Ferrari, Red Bull, Red Bull. Not a good session so far for Red Bull and McLaren.

07 May

Perez can only go P10. Not a good time.

07 May

Verstappen was on a decent first lap on the softs but backed off after going wide at Turn 10. A few are struggling to get it right.

07 May

Leclerc was just 0.165s slower than Hamilton on that lap...

07 May

After setting a purple sector three, Leclerc goes P3 just ahead of Ocon. Softs all round now.

07 May

Perez is down in P8 after his efforts on the medium compound.

07 May

After a scruffy first sector, he ultimately improves by a tenth but it's not enough to stay top as Hamilton does a 1:18.170.

07 May

Bottas is out on the softs.

07 May

Verstappen meanwhile is three tenths off the pace after the first rounds of runs on the mediums.

07 May

Bottas returns to P1 with a 1:18.419 and Hamilton goes less than a tenth down. No messing about here this afternoon.

07 May

Verstappen takes P1 with a 1:19.041.

07 May

Bottas does a 1:19.087 to go top while Hamilton goes two-tenths slower.

07 May

Everyone is out and on mediums.

07 May

As is always the case with these 60-minute sessions, the track is busy already.

07 May

Right then, let's get into it. FP1 is underway.

07 May

Most cars spent the vast majority of FP1 using the hard tyre, so we're expecting to see quicker times in the next hour.

07 May

Sergio Perez meanwhile wasn't able to get a clean lap on the board with soft tyres after being blocked by Daniel Ricciardo and will be desperate to do this afternoon.

07 May

Behind the usual suspects, Ferrari looked strongest. Lando Norris may have claimed P4, but he was on the soft tyre while Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz only used the medium and finished in P5 and P6.

07 May

Valtteri Bottas topped the session, but Max Verstappen was just 0.33s slower and Lewis Hamilton was less than than a tenth off the Dutchman.

07 May

Red Bull and Mercedes were expected to be close here, and that's exactly how things were in FP1 this morning.

07 May

Hello and welcome back to live coverage of the Spanish Grand Prix weekend. Next up, in half an hour, is FP2.

08 May

And how about Ferrari, could they spoil the party this afternoon? Join us in around 90 minutes as we begin the build-up to qualifying.

08 May

Well then, it looks like qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix will stage the next chapter of Hamilton vs Verstappen. But at a venue where overtaking is not easy, this could well be the most important pole position of the season so far.

08 May

It's Alonso in P11, followed by Tsunoda, Ocon, Stroll, Russell, Giovinazzi, Vettel, Latifi, Schumacher and Mazepin.

08 May

The top 10 in full: Verstappen, Hamilton, Leclerc, Sainz, Bottas, Norris, Gasly Ricciardo, Raikkonen and Perez.

08 May

And that is the end of the session. It is Verstappen who goes into qualifying on top. Hamilton no doubt will be right there though and Ferrari are looking very handy indeed!

08 May

Verstappen returns to the pits, with four minutes remaining he calls time on a solid FP3 session.

08 May

Hello Max! It's P1 for the Dutchman with a 1:17.8. Hamilton improved slightly on his lap but needs another couple of tenths.

08 May

Bottas can't nail the final sector either, he remains P4.

08 May

10 minutes left in the session, Hamilton is on top with a two-tenth buffer over Leclerc. The Ferrari SF21 is enjoying itself here in Barcelona.

08 May

A few moments going on out there. Raikkonen has a puncture, and Norris pushes a bit too hard and ends up in the gravel at Turn 10. Engineer: "Watch out for Latifi behind." Raikkonen: "I don't care."

08 May

A better lap from Ricciardo on the softs who moves within a tenth of team-mate Lando Norris.

08 May

Hamilton goes purple in Sector 2 but catches a bit too much kerb coming out of the chicane and does not improve.

08 May

Raikkonen improves to P5 and Russell P7. It seems like the track is starting to grip up nicely.

08 May

Ferrari are back in the game! Leclerc and Sainz go P2 and P3 respectively to split the Mercs.

08 May

Yuki Tsunoda has been having a word with his race engineer, unhappy at his timing to feed him information. Luckily he has the track to himself right now to fine-tune the car and that relationship.

08 May

Russell is up to P9! He was on the soft tyres, but after yesterday's struggles, that is a real statement lap.

08 May

That was a messy lap for Verstappen, a snap at Turn 9, wide at Turn 10 and a hand in the air to the traffic. As expected, he does not improve his time.

08 May

A 1:18.3 from Hamilton now takes him to the top of the timings, but Red Bull look far improved on Friday's showing.

08 May

It's P1 for Bottas, but a very handy lap from Verstappen on the mediums, just two tenths to find on Bottas.

08 May

Here come Mercedes, Bottas and Hamilton are going straight into their soft-tyre runs.

08 May

Leclerc shaves another tenth off his time while Carlos Sainz improves to P2 in the other Ferrari.

08 May

Leclerc takes over P1, improving on Giovinazzi's time by 0.37s on the soft rubber.

08 May

Alfa Romeo comfortably into the 1:19s on the soft rubber. Antonio Giovinazzi has the early advantage on Kimi Raikkonen.

08 May

A 1:20.38 for Perez on his first flying lap, two tenths up on Ricciardo. Both drivers were using the mediums there.

08 May

As Alonso finishes his latest lap on the medium rubber, Perez emerges from the pit lane to get his session underway.

08 May

Alonso has the circuit to himself at the moment, a shame he does not have his home fans in the grandstands to welcome him back.

08 May

Valtteri Bottas is just finishing his coffee.

08 May

We have a green light, FP3 begins. But, it does not seem like there will be a rush to head out.

08 May

Just a few minutes to go now until FP3 gets underway, it is clear blue skies here in Barcelona!

08 May

But without doubt it is Williams and Haas in the greatest need of a performance boost. Williams were adrift of the midfield pack during Friday practice, with Haas then a further step back.

08 May

Also in need of a strong FP3 is Daniel Ricciardo. The Aussie was left feeling neither comfortable nor confident in the McLaren come the end of FP2. His struggle to adapt to his new team is continuing here in Barcelona.

08 May

Missing from the equation in FP2 was Red Bull. "Nothing weird" going on said Max Verstappen, but his lowly P9 finish was worrying, even if he did make an error on his push lap with the soft tyres. Sergio Perez managed only P10 in the other Red Bull.

08 May

Another standout of Friday practice was Alpine. Esteban Ocon signed off up in P4, a fraction ahead of team-mate Fernando Alonso. And at his home race, Alonso predicts there is more pace to come yet.

08 May

Charles Leclerc is taking a step by step approach to a race weekend these days after his Portimao struggles, and the results arrived immediately with P3 in FP2, only 0.165s shy of Hamilton's benchmark. Can Ferrari show that pace again in FP3?

08 May

It is advantage Mercedes after Friday as Lewis Hamilton finished atop the standings, but around this short lap in Barcelona the midfield is threatening an upset.

08 May

Hello and welcome back to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. One more hour of practice awaits before qualifying to set the grid for the Spanish Grand Prix. All times are local.
