We've already identified the most fuel-efficient petrol and diesel options on South Africa's new-vehicle market, but what about a powertrain that holds the potential for even more impressive frugality? Yes, we're talking about the not-so-humble hybrid.

There are more options than ever in the hybrid segment of the local market, with pricing bookends running from R413 000 (for the soon-to-launch Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8 Hybrid XS) to just short of R12 million (for the Ferrari SF90 Spider).

Predictably, the most efficient models from this group – based on the admittedly optimistic figures claimed by the respective manufacturers – are all plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), which means there's no space here for full (aka parallel) hybrids such as the Toyota Corolla 1.8 Hybrid XS, Honda Fit Hybrid, and Toyota Prius.
