Since making its local introduction in March this year, Toyota South Africa has managed to sell around 900 units of its new Urban Cruiser each month. It is an undoubtedly impressive feat that's testament to South Africans' trust in the automaker.

Recently, Toyota revealed that while the range-topping Xr grade is the one with all the bells and whistles, the mid-range Xs models are the ones that garnered widespread interest from buyers.

Toyota says: "The Xs variant strives for a balanced specification level, offering buyers a full complement of core specification items at an attractive price point."

Balanced specification level

Kickstarting the Urban Cruiser Xs' specification is keyless entry with push-start technology. All-round electric windows, tilt-adjustable steering, power-adjustable mirrors, LED headlamps and LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL) are among the standard features.

Inside, the multimedia system has touchscreen technology and is Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatible. Toyota says that these services allow access and can display Google Maps, Waze, and Apple Maps. Bluetooth, AUX, and USB functionalities have not been omitted. In terms of practicality, the rear backrest has a 60:40 split to increase the 328L load volume when fully upright.

Wallace du Plessis said of the car: "I found the Urban Cruiser to be a very competent small car with adequate space for four adults, a usable boot that can be expanded by folding the seats almost flat and pleasant road manners. Great for a family with small children or empty nesters with places to go."
