Toyota was all ready to showcase its new Yaris-based compact SUV, but those plans were derailed by the outbreak of the coronavirus.

The 2020 Geneva International Motor Show would have been the platform where the world would have seen Toyota's latest model and newest addition to its growing SUV range.

This new Yaris SUV will share the same GA-B platform with its hatchback sibling, but is believed to sit some 40mm higher from the ground.

As expected, the Yaris-based SUV will be longer and wider than the car it's based on.

In addition, the GA-B platform allows Toyota to equip the new SUV with all-wheel-drive; if it so chooses.

Engine choices

Given that the SUV is based on the Yaris, it is safe to assume that it will be powered by the same engines that will be doing duty in the forthcoming hatchback. A newly-developed 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol, mated to a CVT (continuously variable transmission), will power one of the Yaris models, while the same engine with a hybrid system could also be on offer.

This 1.5-litre engine can also be mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

A 1.0-litre engine, mated to a CVT, is also available on the Yaris hatchback. While power figures are still undisclosed, all, or some, of these engine choices will do duty in the Yaris SUV.

Unfortunately, a Toyota SA representative confirmed that this model is planned for the local market.
