Like many aficionados and purists, I'm torn by the news that a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine will power the next Mercedes-AMG C63 S. Heaven help us as we try to comprehend the lunacy of such actions.

Where in your life have you heard that one of the finest saloons ever made will forego its V8 engine in favour of something smaller. It doesn't matter that the new engine will produce more power than the current bi-turbo 4.0-litre mill, ditching the V8 is blasphemous and almost verges on craziness.
