Hyundai's new i20 has made its local debut in South Africa. The biggest news around the car is the addition of a new turbocharged engine that will headline the local line-up. In total, buyers can choose from eight models - all powered by one of three engines.

The i20 Motion models are powered by either a 1.2- or 1.4-litre petrol engine, respectively mated to a five-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmission. The 1.2 Fluid features a five-speed manual gearbox, while the 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo engine is reserved for the Fluid grade only. This engine is mated to either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Regardless of the model, the i20 comes standard with Hyundai's 5-year or 150 000km manufacturer's warranty (with an additional 2-year or 50 000km powertrain warranty), 5-year or 160 000km perforation warranty, and 7-year or 150 000km roadside assistance.

New dimensions

The new i20 is slightly bigger than the model it replaces. As such, the car boasts with a height of 1505mm, a length of 3995mm, and an overall width of 1775mm. This puts it square in the face of the Volkswagen Polo and Ford Fiesta, against which the Hyundai will do battle for segment honours.

Owners will have the option of six exterior colours (Polar white, Typhoon silver, Titan gray, Starry night, Phantom black, and Fiery red), but all three Fluid models have the option for a two-tone colour scheme: black roof and Polar white or black roof and Fiery red.

Keyless entry and central locking are standard across the range, as are rear parking sensors with a camera. Fluid models feature a total of six airbags, but all models feature Isofix child seat attachments.

Updated interior

The new i20's interior is another aspect Hyundai did not skimp on. As such, the cabin has been even more ergonomically friendly, with each model boasting something unique. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across the range, but Fluid models feature a leather steering wheel and gear knob, while the 1.0-litre two-tone models have a red and black interior.

On Fluid models, drivers can activate cruise control via controls on the steering wheel, and the electric side mirrors can be folded in with the touch of a button.
