Priced to sell - Chery Tiggo 7 Pro has landed in SA - here's everything we know about it

  • Tiggo 7 Pro is priced from around R400 000 to take on the popular Haval Jolion and Mahindra XUV300.
  • It's powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and offers front-wheel drive via a 'nine-speed' CVT.
  • Packed with more luxury, convenience and safety features than most luxury vehicles that cost twice as much money.

Tiggo 4 Pro too diminutive for your needs? Tiggo 8 Pro too boisterous? Well, as Obi-Wan Kenobi once said, 'there is another'. Chery Southern Africa's Tiggo 7 Pro has touched down on local soil, and it's going to be available in two flavours - Distinctive or Executive.

The entry-point Distinctive will set you back R409 900 while the range-topping Executive costs R444 900

To put its pricing and position in perspective, the most expensive Tiggo 4 Pro costs R369 900, and the cheapest Tiggo 8 Pro costs R496 900.

The Tiggo 7 Pro fits perfectly between the 4 and the 8 versions, but it begs the question - how will Chery (and at what price point) position its yet to be released Tiggo 5. Nevertheless, if you are in the market for a versatile family vehicle, you might want to take note of the Tiggo 7 Pro's offering.

Contemporary design to appeal to trendsetters

With this third model in its local line-up, Chery has bolstered its SUV presence, offering motorists a choice of a compact and sporty model (Tiggo 4 Pro), a larger and more luxurious five-seat SUV (Tiggo 7 Pro) and a flagship SUV with seven seats and luxury interior (Tiggo 8 Pro).

"At Chery, we reserve the PRO moniker for our best SUVs, and the Tiggo 7 Pro is no exception. From the strikingly modern and flowing design to the all-digital cockpit, drivers will never feel like they have had to compromise on luxury, specifications or performance when buying a Tiggo Pro," says Tony Liu, Executive Deputy General Manager of Chery South Africa.

The Tiggo 7 Pro shares many of its siblings' design cues, which Steve Eum, the Executive Director of Design for the Chery Group, brought to life under the design language of "Life in Motion".

The Tiggo 7 Pro offers a distinct hexagonal grille with its three-dimensional diamond-shaped brightwork, elongated front lights that run from the grille to the start of the sharply creased shoulder line and the deeply scalloped lower bumper and air intakes.

From the side of the Tiggo 7 Pro, unique 18-inch alloy wheels (with red brake callipers on the Executive model) and a concave-to-convex curve in the side profile create a uniquely sporty feeling.

The glasshouse (with standard privacy glass) is framed in a black and chrome combination, which emphasises the vehicle's sporty stance and helps to create a floating roof design.

At the rear, an edge-to-edge lightbar taillight is only interrupted by the large and bold Chery logo. The roof-mounted spoiler and dual exhaust surrounds are standard.

Both versions come with 'everything'

Both the Distinctive and the Executive Tiggo 7 Pro models are well equipped. Both models have electrically adjustable, foldable and heated side mirrors with integrated LED indicators. All lights are LEDs and switch on automatically. The same goes for the LED illumination for the door sills. Both models also boast intelligent wide-angle fog lights and light-bar-type LED daytime running lights.

The interior is upholstered in durable black synthetic leather with contrasting stitching. The driver's seat features a six-way electric adjustment, and in the Executive model, the passenger seat has a four-way electrical adjustment.

The leather-clad steering wheel offers controls for the infotainment and voice command system and can be adjusted in four directions. Both models have a push-button Start/Stop system.

Three large-format digital displays come standard too. The first is a 7-inch digital centre information panel in front of the driver. This floating screen offers a host of customisation options, and it promises clear legibility of all vehicle information in light or dark conditions.

A second 10.25-inch LCD screen crowns the centre console. As per other Chery Tiggo Pro models, this screen forms the heart of the vehicle information and entertainment settings. As expected, the system has a high-output audio system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Bluetooth hands-free dialling as standard. The centre screen also projects the image from the standard reverse camera, and there are two USB ports in front and one in the second row.

As with the other Pro models, the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro comes standard with Chery's voice command system that allows for complete control of the cabin, climate control and even the one-touch electric windows and (on the Executive model) the operation of the electric panoramic sunroof.

The third screen is flush-mounted below the infotainment system. This screen features the newest technology for integrating physical knobs (for what they call eyes-free adjustment) and a high-resolution screen for the climate control system.

The climate control system can independently cool or heat two different zones. It is fitted with N95 air filtration, and it also powers the cooling system of the cooled central glove box.

All Tiggo 7 Pro models also offer wireless charging for smartphones and ear/air pods and multiple colour ambient lighting as standard.

Brimmed with safety features

The list of luxury and convenience features in the Tiggo 7 Pro is, arguably, overshadowed by its list of standard safety and security features. This model received a five-star rating from the Chinese New Car Assessment Programme (C-NCAP).

All models come with ISOFIX child seat anchors, ABS brakes on all four disk wheels (ventilated in front) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Emergency Brake Assistance (EBA), Hill Start Assistance (HSA) and Hill Descent Control (HDC). All models have Rear Traffic Alert (RTA) and Blind Spot Detection (BSD).

On the Executive model, Chery further added a comprehensive intelligent safety package, which includes Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Front Collision Warning (FCW), Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) and a 360-degree around-view monitor.

The Distinctive model boasts four airbags as standard, and in the Executive model, there are two additional curtain airbags for a total of six.

All Tiggo 7 Pro models also come with an alarm and immobiliser system, remote locking and window closing and an electrically operated tailgate with programmable height adjustment.

It offers decent poke on paper

Both versions of the Tiggo 7 Pro are fitted with Chery's 1.5-litre turbopetrol four-cylinder engine. It is equipped with multipoint direct injection and 16 valves (4 per cylinder) for 108kW and 210Nm in a flat torque power band between 1 750rpm and 4 500rpm.

The engine delivers its power to the front wheels via a CVT transmission with nine pre-programmed "spreads". The gear shifter is fully electronic.

We'll let you know its fuel consumption when we drive it at the launch in the coming weeks.
