Sitting between the Evoque and the Range Rover Sport in the portfolio, the Velar has remained a niche proposition for wealthy people with a taste for ultra-luxurious sporty SUVs. It hasn't been as big of a hit in South Africa as it has in Europe, but Jaguar Land Rover South Africa hopes to attract more customers with it as the Velar range has been honed for the 2022 model year.

Thirteen refreshed models will be available for local buyers come the third quarter of this year, including plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variants and an Edition version. The Edition model was sold in South Africa in limited numbers in 2020. Prices for the new line-up haven't been confirmed yet, as it's too early to call regarding exchange rates and final specifications for SA.

The most advanced Velar yet

Although the current range of Velar models packs a fantastic range of comfort, convenience, connected and safety features, the latest versions raise the bar. The 2022 models come with refined electrified 48-volt engines, the latest Pivi infotainment systems, and a vast array of health and well-being technologies that aim to better your life on the road.

The 2.0-litre four-cylinder P400e, the plug-in hybrid version of the Velar, is said to offer a smooth and refined drive, producing a combined 297kW of power and 640Nm of torque from its 221kW petrol engine and 105kW electric motor. It can accelerate from zero to 100km/h in 5.4 seconds.

A 17.1kWh lithium-ion battery under the boot floor can be charged to 80% in 30 minutes using a 100kW DC rapid charger or 1 hour 40 minutes using a standard 7kW home wallbox charger. With zero tailpipe emissions in full-electric mode, an impressive real-world range of up to 53km is claimed. Meanwhile, the derivative's average fuel economy is said to go as low as 2.2 litres per 100km.

The Velar is also available with 48-volt Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) technology for reduced fuel consumption and heightened refinement. This 3.0-litre straight-six petrol engine, badged as P340, features the latest electrification technologies for efficient performance.

The MHEV system uses a Belt integrated Starter Generator (BiSG) in the engine bay to harvest energy usually lost under deceleration, which is then stored in a 48-volt lithium-ion battery located beneath the rear loadspace. It can redeploy the stored electrical energy to assist the engine when accelerating. The P340 generates 250kW and 480Nm to deliver a sports-car-like zero to 100km/h sprint of 6.3 seconds.

Additional engine options include a next-generation four-cylinder Ingenium D200 diesel unit with 147kW, a straight-six D300 diesel that delivers 221kW and a hefty 650Nm torque, and a 184kW petrol four-cylinder P250.

All the tech you'll ever need

Active Road Noise Cancellation technology (if you tick the box for the Meridian sound system - please do, it's fantastic) is accompanied by Cabin Air Purification Plus, which optimises interior air quality. Moreover, its expanded Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) now include Rear Camera as standard and Adaptive Cruise Control with Steering Assist.

The experience inside the Range Rover Velar is an even calmer sanctuary, they say, enhanced by Active Road Noise Cancellation. The intelligent technology works like a pair of high-end noise cancellation headphones, constantly monitoring vibrations from the road surface and calculating the opposite phase sound wave needed to remove the noise heard by the occupants. The effect is subtle, but the minimum reduction of four decibels ensures an even more refined and calming interior space.

Cabin Air Purification Plus for Land Rover offers improved air quality for all occupants. Building on Jaguar Land Rover's existing Cabin Air Ionisation with PM2.5 filtration technology, the latest system optimises cabin air quality by automatically introducing fresh external air when sensors detect carbon dioxide levels fall outside acceptable levels. This can occur in the event of air recirculation being on for extended periods, for example, in polluted areas or with several occupants. High concentrations of carbon dioxide can cause drowsiness, reducing driver alertness, so the feature is intended to provide well-being and safety benefits. We're keen to test this, and we'll let you know how it works.

Another feature we're keen to test is the enhanced Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), including a rear camera as standard and Adaptive Cruise Control with Steering Assist. Adaptive Cruise Control with Steering Assist enhances driver comfort, especially on long journeys, by gently assisting steering, acceleration and braking to centre the vehicle in the lane while maintaining a set distance from cars ahead. The feature is fitted as standard to HSE models and is available as part of the Driver Assist Pack.

Depending on the model you buy, you will also have enhanced Pivi and Pivi Pro systems. Jaguar Land Rover notes that Pivi is designed around ease of use, with a simple interface reducing the number of interactions to enhance safety. Crisp graphics and super-fast responsiveness are enabled with an advanced electrical architecture under the surface, ensuring the screens and navigation system are ready to go in seconds.

You can access software updates over-the-air reducing the need to visit a dealership. An embedded data connection means customers have access to the most up-to-date apps, maps, services and vehicle software, with updates scheduled via the touchscreen to suit them. We're not sure how many years this data plan remains active, but we'll be sure to find out more about how this works when we test the Velar models later this year.

Based on the R-Dynamic SE, the "Velar Edition" comes with a black contrast roof complemented by Black Pack exterior detailing and 20-inch Gloss Black alloy wheels. A sliding panoramic roof and privacy glass complete the enhancements.
