When it comes to small cargo vehicles, there is only one option, really: the Nissan NP200.

The small half-tonne bakkie is a popular choice among private buyers and companies alike and often counts among the best-selling vehicles in South Africa every month.

But did you know that Hyundai has a rival to the NP200? No, not a bakkie. Its Grandi10 is also available in Cargo configuration and offers ample space for those needing a vehicle with a vast cargo area.

Is it a viable option, though? Well, we think so.

The Grandi10 Cargo offers a total load area of 1202 litres, thanks to the absence of the rear bench. The flat area stretches from the flat floor to the roof of the car, plus there is space for a full-size spare wheel in the boot. Further aiding practicality is a sturdy wire mesh that covers the rear windows and the one in the fifth door. This protects the windows from cargo scraping against it.

There's also a wire mesh to add further divide between the front seats and the loading area.

Interestingly, the load area, as mentioned above, compares well to the NP200's 1250L.

The car has a low weight of 912kg, which means that it can transport a load of up to 350kg.

Comfort included

Though the Grandi10 Cargo offers seating for two passengers only, occupants are not left without comfort features. Our test unit, the 1.0 Motion, is offered with front electric windows, a media system that's Bluetooth, AUX, and USB compatible, front fog lights, air conditioning, and power steering.

Hyundai did not refrain from equipping its Cargo as best it could, and even this Motion model makes a strong case for itself.

Stanley Anderson, sales and operation director at Hyundai SA, says: "The Hyundai i10 Cargo is particularly suited for courier companies for transportation of packages, as well as security companies where it is used as support vehicles.

"Customers will also find that owning a Hyundai Grand i10 Cargo is a satisfying experience, due to good parts supply and stockholding of parts, as well as Hyundai's seven-year/200 000km manufacturer's warranty. Furthermore, repairs after an accident should not take long due to a good supply of body panels and other accident repair parts."

Engine & price

The Grandi10 1.0 Motion Cargo is powered by a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine that produces 48kW and 94Nm. A five-speed manual gearbox sends power to the front wheels, and average fuel consumption is rated at 5.4-litres/100km.

Drive in the Cargo is akin to that of the standard Grandi10 and stirs a sense of familiarity. It's not difficult navigating through traffic with the car, and cruising at 130km/h does not deter the relatively good balance the car is equipped with.

The prices of both variants include seven-year/150 000km roadside assistance, as well as Hyundai's seven-year/200 000km manufacturer's warranty.

The Fluid variant also comes standard with a two-year/30 000km service plan.
