The Suzuki Dzire is a subcompact value-for-money sedan originally made by the Japanese brand for the Indian market in 2008. Recently the model we get in SA, has had a bit of a nip and tuck and a general upgrade, but without increasing the retail price, which means it is an absolute bargain now.

Yes, it is a simple car without a load of high tech gadgetry, but I think that is exactly its charm and USP. It is the car for someone who just wants decent, safe, reliable mobility but with the essential things like Bluetooth, a USB port and safety equipment fitted as standard.

Think last year's Swift with a boot. This small sedan is the most popular B-segment sedan in the world for a reason.

Standard on all models is electric windows, power steering, an immobiliser and alarm system, air conditioning and remote central locking.

The GL model now gets 15-inch alloy wheels, front fog lights, a radio with AUX/Bluetooth/USB connectivity, tachometer, a tilt-adjustable steering column, additional silver accents and premium white illumination. The GL-model also adds adjustable rear air vents with an additional 12V socket and a rear armrest with integrated cup holders.

The seats are very comfortable and covered in what appears to be durable fabric.

Two new colours have been added: Premium Silver Metallic and Phoenix Red Pearl in addition to the Sherwood Brown Metallic, Arctic White Pearl, Oxford Blue Metallic and Magma Grey Metallic.

The space of the Dzire is also decent. The 378-litre boot is quite good for this size of the car, and shoulder space is good. It is big enough inside to be a family car. The air conditioning is effective, and the steering light enough in town but not too light on the highway.

Safe and reliable

The lightweight HEARTECT platform is safe by design and includes two airbags and anti-lock brakes with brake force distribution and emergency brake assistance. Fitted as standard are a security alarm and immobiliser and ISOFIX anchor points for rear-fitted child seats.

The 15-inch wheels are an important safety feature because of the possibility of striking a pothole on our roads. Some smaller cars have smaller wheels that do not 'ride' obstacles like potholes or pavements well. The general size gives one a feeling of more security than the small city cars.

The brand is known to be reliable and long-lasting. Suzuki offers a five-year or 200 000km comprehensive mechanical warranty to back their reputation up.


Suzuki claims a fuel consumption of 4.9-litres/100km, but a more realistic figure is around the think 5.5 to 6 mark. Suzuki uses the 1.2-litre K12M engine in several models. It can be mated to either a five-speed manual gearbox with a new convergent shifting system for smoother, more secure shifts (which I can attest to) or the automated manual gearbox (AMT). I found the Dzire pleasant to drive around town with easy, predictable handling.

Pricing is very keen compared to its immediate competition like the VW Polo, which starts at R246 700 without optional equipment added, Honda Amaze from R198 400 and Ford Figo Sedan from R221 900. The list price of the GA manual is R182 900, the slightly grander GL is R196 900, and the GL AMT is R210 900, which includes a two-year service plan.
