Styled to take on the premium players in the mid-sized SUV segment, with technology to back it up, the new Pininfarina-designed Scorpio-N has officially broken cover and is a beauty. Mahindra unveiled its much-awaited seven-seater, the 'All-New Scorpio-N' in South Africa this week, which it says combines performance, technology, capability and innovation.
The All-New Scorpio-N is designed to redefine the D-segment SUV category with its dominating presence, head-turning design, commanding driving position and well-appointed interior. Moreover, they note that making good on its authentic SUV promise, it delivers high on performance and adventure capabilities for a thrilling driving experience.
Designed collaboratively by Pininfarina in Italy and Mahindra India Design Studio (MIDS) in Mumbai and engineered by the teams at Mahindra Research Valley (MRV) near Chennai and Mahindra North American Technical Center (MNATC) in the USA, and manufactured at the state-of-the-art world-class facility at Chakan, Pune, the All-New Scorpio-N is genuinely a global product.
Time for Mahindra to rise
Sachin Arolkar, Head of International Operations, Automotive Division, Mahindra & Mahindra Limited, says: "We are happy to have simultaneously unveiled the all-new Scorpio-N in South Africa and Nepal alongside India. The Scorpio-N is planned for introduction in South Africa in the coming months, and it will proudly carry the new Twin Peaks logo.
The new brand identity is in tune with Mahindra's focus on being the makers of sophisticated and authentic SUVs. It heralds a strategic shift across our SUV portfolio, where we are putting the building blocks in place for a new world with a range of authentic SUVs."
"Our decision to include South Africa in the global reveal of the Scorpio-N is a clear sign of our commitment to the country as our second home outside India. Mahindra South Africa is regularly on the list of the country's fastest-growing SUV and bakkie brands. We look forward to introducing our next-generation models here and welcoming more South Africans to the Mahindra family," Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa, expounds.
Following its reveal, the Scorpio-N will embark on a comprehensive local testing programme before coming to local showroom floors in 2023.
Built for demanding drivers
The All-New Scorpio-N is engineered for those looking for a new-age authentic SUV. The vehicle is built on Mahindra's new third-generation body-on-frame platform and is said to boast class-leading structural rigidity, off-road capability and exemplary on-road manners.
It's powered by a TGDi mStallion (Petrol) engine with 149kW of power and 380Nm of torque or a mHawk (Diesel) engine with 129kW of power and 400Nm torque, offered in both six-speed manual and automatic transmissions, and 4X4 comes as an option too.
They say the Scorpio-N is designed to rule all terrains with the 4XPLOR, first-in-class intelligent terrain management technology. With a mere touch of a button, the electric shift-on-the-fly four-wheel-drive system transforms the Scorpio-N from two-wheel-drive mode into an all-conquering, capable beast. The Scorpio-N also gets three drive modes to match the driver's mood: Zip, Zap and Zoom. Zip for smooth riding, primarily through traffic, Zap for true Mahindra SUV performance and, Zoom to amp it up for more engaging and exhilarating driving.
Mahindra SA will share more information on local versions in the coming months.
