Volkswagen's Golf R stationwagon will not be sold in South Africa.

It is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine that makes 235kW and 420Nm.

The eighth-generation Golf GTI and R models are yet to be launched locally.

Local petrolheads continue to wait for Volkswagen to launch the eighth generation of its GTI and R performance models.

Besides both being launched in other markets, there is also a station wagon version of the more powerful R.

The more extended version is powered by the familiar EA888 2.0-litre TSI engine that makes 235kW and 420Nm, mated to a seven-speed DSG that sends power to all four wheels. It sprints from 0 to 100km/h in 4.9-seconds while running to an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h. An optional R Performance package is also available that pushes the maximum speed up to 270km/h.

Currently only the Audi RS4 and RS6 Avante models are the only available stationwagons in the local market, and considering the Golf's popularity, it's almost somewhat surprising the Golf R wagon won't come this way. However, automakers do loads of market research before taking on these decisions and frankly, if there's not enough interest to make importing a model over to SA, it's best not to. We'd be paying a lot more in taxes and exorbitant prices that just don't make it worthwhile.

Sven Smeets, Head of R Business Unit, says: "The Golf R Estate is the perfect combination of a compact Golf R and an estate. Sportiness, performance and emotions meet space, versatility and innovation."

Volkswagen's Golf R station wagon will sadly not be sold in South Africa.
