The model was launched on Monday, 19 July via a digital premier on social media. The higher-performance R is also set to join the ranks at a later date.
Back for round 8
The new model is powered by the brand's popular EA888 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that develops 180kW and 370Nm, mated a seven-speed DSG. Acceleration from 0-100km/h takes place in 6.4 seconds and runs to a regulated top speed of 250km/h.
The GTI will go up against some formidable competition locally like Toyota's Yaris GR, Hyundai's I30 N, and BMW's 128ti, all of which are similarly priced.
The GTI comes standard with a three-year or 120 000km mechanical warranty, five-year or 90 000km EasyDrive Service Plan and a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty.
