Like the versions before it, the eighth generation features a four-wheel-drive system with torque vectoring. Volkswagen says this allows 100% of the torque to be sent to one dedicated wheel and reduces understeer to 'nothing' according to the carmaker.

Compared to a normal Golf 8, the R is 20mm lower to the ground. It is adorned with a bespoke front bumper, and blue brake callipers housing 357mm front brake discs.

It sits on 19-inch wheels, has body side skirts, and four chrome-plated exhausts at the rear which sit next to a black diffuser on either side. The rear is finished off with a large wing.

There are five different drive modes available, including 'special' and 'drift' to compliment the 'comfort', 'race', 'sport', and 'individual' configurations.

Inside, the R has black nappa leather seats with 'R' logos festooned around the cabin.

Volkswagen South Africa says it hasn't nailed down a launch date for the new model but has earmarked either the final quarter of 2021 or the first quarter of 2022 for its lcoal introduction.
