  • Volkswagen will continue its dominance in the A0 segment with its new Polo Sedan.
  • The new model has striking fresh looks, a stylish interior, and a host of technological features.
  • Its massive boot offering 521 litres of space makes it a practical car for buyers.

Sedans have become a rare breed in South Africa, and there are very few options for motorists looking for this body type. The Kia Pegas, Nissan Almera, and Suzuki Ciaz offer loads of space and practicality for families who still want a good, value-for-money sedan. Smaller offerings include the Suzuki Dzire (a sedan version of the popular Swift) and Honda's Amaze and Ballade models. Of course, there are still some premium German cars available if you have more cash to fork out for a BMW 3 Series and loads of pickings from Audi's wide variety of sedans, such as the A3 Sedan or A4, not to mention their electric models too.

DRIVEN | VW Polo Life hits a sweet spot: a fuel-efficient hatchback that feels more luxurious

With the demise of the stunning VW Arteon, Jetta and CC, the new Polo Sedan is the automaker's only sedan available in its entire model range in South Africa. Since VW's badge will always hold much clout, it's no surprise their model finds much favour locally.

Built in Pune, India, the sedan model has found 44 267 new homes since its local launch in 2011. Volkswagen says the new Polo Sedan will redefine the A0 Sedan segment in South Africa by fulfilling customers' mobility needs.

Striking new looks

The new Polo Sedan has a distinctive and striking exterior design with sharp shoulder lines. It measures 4.56m long, 1.752m wide and 1.5m in height.

It comes standard with LED headlights and taillights, a signature chrome grille, 16-inch alloy wheels (only available in the Life derivatives) and a chrome package with chrome window strips and door handles accentuating the striking look of the sedan.

Stylish and modern interior

The new Polo Sedan also has a versatile and modern interior loaded with connectivity options and technology. There's a dual-tone interior, dual-tone seat upholstery and premium touch surfaces. Standard features include keyless entry, ambient lighting, Climatronic air-conditioning (only available in the Life derivatives), a multi-function steering wheel, and 521 litres of boot space.

More nice-to-have goodies include a 7-inch touchscreen radio, a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system equipped with wireless App-Connect and wireless mobile charging (only available in the Life derivatives) and eight sound speakers.

On the safety front, there are up to six airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), multi-collision braking system, LED headlights and taillights, tyre pressure monitoring, Park Distance Control in the rear, and rearview camera (only available in the Life derivatives) and Hill Start Assist (only available in the Life Tiptronic derivative).

What are the power figures?

Under the bonnet, a four-cylinder MPI petrol engine is mated to a 5-speed manual or 6-speed Tiptronic transmission. The engine delivers 81kW power and 152Nm at 3850 to 4100rpm. It takes 11.2 seconds to reach 100km/h, while the top speed is 190km/h, and fuel consumption is claimed at 6.2 litres/100km.

The Tiptronic model delivers the same power and torque as the manual, taking 12.2 seconds to reach 100km/h. The top speed here is claimed at 187km/h, and fuel consumption is rated at 6.5 litres/100km.

Same car, three trim models

The Polo Sedan is available in three equipment lines or trim levels; Polo Sedan, Polo Sedan Life and the Polo Sedan Life Tiptronic. VW SA also says the cars come fully equipped, so there are no optional features. Naturally, this is already included in the price.

LED headlights and taillights, 16-inch steel wheels, App-Connect, 7-inch touchscreen radio, Cruise Control, and a multi-function steering wheel are all standard on the entry-level Sedan model. While the Life model also includes a keyless entry and start rearview camera, 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless mobile charging, wireless App-Connect, power-adjustable and folding exterior mirrors, Climatronic air conditioning, ambient lighting, leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel and gear lever, front fog lamps and cornering lights, a chrome package and 16-inch Scimitar alloy wheels.

The range-topping Life Tiptronic derivative has a more extensive list of options, including Hill Start Assist and a leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel with shifting paddles. The only option you have to make is which of the five body colours you would want your car to be: there's one solid paint (Candy White) and four metallic colours (Wild Cherry Red, Carbon Steel Grey, Reflex Silver and Rising Blue).
