Even though Volkswagen's Golf GTI is often referred to as the pinnacle of hot hatch performance, they added stronger spice to an already brewing recipe with the Clubsport.
The first Golf GTI Clubsport was launched in 2016 and was sold as a track-ready version of the already established GTI. Sending power to the front wheels is a beefed-up version of the EA888 engine found in the GTI, with power figures of 221kW and 400Nm.
The original Clubsport developed 195kW and 213kW using an overboost function. VW went a level above when it launched the Clubsport S in a limited edition of 400 global units with an output of 228kW.
Driving the Golf GTI Clubsport S, pro race driver Benjamin Leuchter set a new lap record for front-wheel-drive vehicles on the Nordschleife at Nürburgring in May 2016 in a time of 07mins49:21.
Unfortunately for local petrolheads, the latest model won't be making its way to local shores. - the GTI and R are the only high-performance hatchbacks that will be sold in SA.
