For years, product planners resisted the idea of a go-faster Polo. VW had built a terrific sub-brand and business around Golf GTI and did not wish to risk any cannibalisation.
This enshrinement of VW's halo hot hatch meant that Polo GTI didn't happen until 1995, two decades after the original Golf GTI was revealed.
But there was an exception. A Polo that was indeed the measure of any rival Golf GTI, although it did not carry the same affix. The car was the G40.
