Several Wheels24 readers have lost or had their driver's licence cards stolen during the lockdown. Here's how to go about getting a new card if you need to replace yours.
And then some readers had expired driver's licence cards before the pandemic even broke out globally. If you happen to fall under that category, there's never been a 90-day extension period for this.
However, with that said, driver's licences don't actually expire, only your card does. That means if your licence card expired its five-year validity status quite some time ago, you're only going to pay for a new licence card - and an additional temporary licence so you can drive around legally while you wait for your new card to arrive.
Remember, any learner or driver's licence card which expired between 26 March and 31 August (and only these dates) have until 31 January 2021 to renew your licence.
If you are able to, please try and renew your licence before the January 2021 deadline. There's no guarantee that a second wave of the coronavirus won't hit South Africa. However, if you suffer from comorbidities, it is best to stay home and stay safe.
How much does it cost to renew my expired driving licence?
Usually, the cost to renew your driver's licence card is R140, but if your licence card has already expired, you'll need to pay R45 extra for a temporary licence, bringing it to a total of R185. This cost might vary in different provinces, so check your local municipality website below.
So what do you need to do?
You will need to complete a Declaration of Lost Documents Form and a Driver's Licence Application Form (DL1), found in the document downloads sections in your municipality website if your vehicle licence card is lost or stolen. I will include all the relevant municipality links below for each province.
Alternatively, you can click on this link here and download the form which you will need to print.
You will also need to bring along your South African ID or valid RSA passport, Traffic Register Certificate, or a valid foreign ID, as well as two recent black-and-white ID-sized photographs. If you need a temporary licence, you'll need three ID-sized photos in total.
Once you have completed the form, you need to submit your completed forms and the documents above to any driving licence testing centre. Motorists will then be notified when the replacement card is ready. You will need to collect it from the same testing centre you applied at.
