The Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric – the first all-electric car from the Swedish luxury brand and thus the first electric car from Volvo Car South Africa – is being launched in this country in the second half 2021.
Deliveries will commence in August.
What makes it special?
While electric cars are fast becoming more commonplace – global electric car sales increased by a whopping 43% last year1. – the Volvo XC40 Recharge is particularly newsworthy because it offers many advantages of an electric vehicle (EV) but without the disadvantages that we've sometimes experienced with these sorts of cars.
What are your thoughts on the new Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric headed for SA in the next few months? Would you be interested in this EV? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below.
One of these advantages is range – this is good, coming in at more than 400km. Another advantage is ground clearance – at an impressive 175mm (versus the 140 mm of some EV rivals).
Another point worth noting about the XC40 Recharge is its pedigree. The XC40 has already been heralded as an exemplary sport utility vehicle (SUV); its trophy cabinet is bulging at the seams. So, this vehicle comes to South Africa with a tried-and-tested formula that has long had local motorists signing on the dotted line and then parking one in their garages.
Unlike other purpose-built EVs, it comes with an interior and exterior styling that has already found favour with local car buyers.
The XC40 Recharge steps up to the plate is in the all-important area of performance. EVs have long been renowned for their brisk performance, but the XC40 Recharge kicks many others into touch. Specifically, its twin electric motors produce 304kW of power and 660Nm of torque to deliver a 0-100 km/h time of just 4.9 seconds. That's somewhat impressive.
Finally, there is the important issue of comfort. Compared to many other EVs, the XC40 Recharge is very comfortable indeed. So, owning one isn't just about saving the planet; it's also about getting from A to B effortlessly
