Electric trucks could be transporting our food and other item on local roads by 2025, according to Daimler Trucks Southern Africa head of product management Christo Kleynhans, Engineering News reported.
The German car company has presented a prototype of a truck at a press conference of Daimler Trucks on the future electric technology strategy in Berlin last month.
The battery-electric Mercedes-Benz eActros LongHaul truck has a range of around 500 kilometres and is projected to be ready for series production in 2024, according to a statement from the company.

Engineering News quotes Kleynhans as saying that Daimler will consider introducing the eActros locally, "depending on the local infrastructure and availability of specific vehicle configurations suitable for a typical, local long-distance application."
Besides electric propulsion, Daimler is also readying trials for a hydrogen-powered truck, called GenH2.
According to Daimler the fuel-cell truck will have a range of up to 1000 kilometers and more for flexible and demanding long-haul transport – customer trials in 2023 and the start of series production in second half of this decade.
