When you think of artificial intelligence (AI) in the context of the automotive industry, your mind likely jumps straight to self-driving vehicles.

But several automakers have already started introducing AI capabilities to their vehicles, mostly in the form of voice-activated virtual assistants and infotainment systems that proactively display appropriate functions at the right time for the user in question. 

Still, artificial intelligence - which is broadly defined as the simulation of human cognitive functions and corresponding actions in machines - has a different role to play before the fully autonomous vehicle is realised.
