  • Porsche has created a bespoke sports car for the forthcoming Gran Turismo 7 game on Sony PlayStation 5.
  • The all-electric vehicle will not be series-produced and will showcase Porsche technology in the virtual world.
  • Expect it to be one of the quickest vehicles in the game, thanks to a 950kW of motivational force (with overboost).

Since 1997, the Gran Turismo racing simulator on Sony PlayStation has grown to become a worldwide phenomenon. We've been playing the game since launch, and with each iteration of the game, more and more of our friends and family have joined us. We love that we can drive the cars of our dreams in photo-realistic worlds around some of the greatest racing circuits in existence.

The earlier games in the series didn't feature all makes and models of cars, and we used to be significantly perturbed that we couldn't find Porsche cars in the Gran Turismo games.

Porsche had struck a game rights deal with Electronic Arts (you might remember Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed), which meant Polyphony Digital, the makers of Gran Turismo, had to turn to German vehicle specialist RUF to be able to feature "Porsche" cars in its simulator.

Nevertheless, we have fond memories of blasting through Special Stage Route 5 in the RUF Yellowbird.

Porsche vehicles in Gran Turismo on PlayStation

Fortunately, for car and gaming fans, the Gran Turismo game series has featured Porsche sports cars since 2017, most recently the Taycan Turbo S. For the launch of the game's seventh edition, Porsche has developed a vehicle purely for the first time in the virtual world.

The Porsche Vision Gran Turismo is the sports car manufacturer's first concept study explicitly created for use in a gaming simulator. It will be available exclusively in Gran Turismo 7, releasing in South Africa on 4 March 2022 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

Why create a vehicle that no one can buy?

Michael Mauer, vice president of style at Porsche, says: "Projects such as the Porsche Vision Gran Turismo are precious for us in the creative process. Further developing our clearly defined Porsche Design DNA and exchanging with designers from other industries is an important part of our work."

He expounds that by partnering with Polyphony Digital, Porsche demonstrates its unique visionary approach and the high level of expertise among its designers. Freed from the constraints of developing models for series production, designers were able to put their ideas for a Gran Turismo concept car into practice. "A vehicle designed purely for the virtual world opens up exciting possibilities for us that are otherwise heavily regimented in a regular design process for a series production car," he adds.

It radiates current and future Porsche design elements

The Porsche Vision Gran Turismo features future-oriented versions of familiar Porsche design elements. The concept car exhibits the brand's typical proportions with an especially sporty height-to-width ratio, an extremely low-set bonnet and very pronounced wings.

They say the lights up front and the integrated air intakes create a visual link to the design language of the Taycan – a nod to the car's purely electric drive. The rear is adorned with a striking narrow light strip – a further development of the light signature familiar from the latest 911 and Taycan models.

You can expect the Porsche Vision Gran Turismo to be one of the hardest-accelerating vehicles in the game, perfect for the sim racer who enjoys smashing lap times. According to Porsche, the all-electric concept vehicle boasts 820kW (950kW with overboost and launch control active) of power delivered to all four wheels, and it can accelerate from a standstill to 100km/h in 2.1 seconds.

Keep your PlayStation controller's right trigger flat, and you will hit 200km/h in just 5.4 seconds before hitting a top speed of 350km/h. The car is "fitted" with an 87kWh battery pack that's good for a 500km range according to the WLTP cycle.
