With the price of fuel showing no signs of rapidly dropping in the near future, buying a fuel efficient car has become first choice for many motorists.

Whether you are downgrading, or able to purchase your own vehicle for the first time, everyone needs to start somewhere, and just because these vehicles might be the cheapest available, it doesn't mean that you're losing out on standard safety or convenience features.

Renault sold 956 Kwid models during September, and it makes a great little car for families who are buying their first vehicle. It comes with ABS, a driver airbag and a radio.  

Datsun has upgraded its Go model not too long ago with a host of upgrades which now include dual front airbags, ABS and EBD. It even comes with a reverse parking alert too. Last month the automaker sold 642 units of the Go and and 140 Go+ models.

The guys at AutoAdvisor put together a comprehensive list of five of the most affordable cars in the local market, all of which currently are priced less than R160 000.

A host of options

They might not be the flashiest on the road but they get you where you need to be with some fuel to spare and also not burn too big of a hole in your pocket with monthly repayments.
