When Volvo Cars announced a couple of years ago that it would become an all-electric carmaker by 2030, the strategy seemed extremely brave and bold. Electric vehicles (EV) are still priced at a premium in most parts of the world, particularly in South Africa, although government and OEM incentives in some countries have boosted interest in electric mobility.

This week, the company confirmed that its global sales grew by 5.6% to 698 693 cars during 2021. According to Volvo Cars spokespeople, the growth in sales demonstrates the company's resilience in the face of persistent supply constraints.

Recharge line-up rises in the ranks

Volvo Cars' global sales results highlight the rising popularity of its new Recharge line-up of cars, which come with a fully electric or plug-in hybrid powertrain depending on your needs. Sales of Recharge models grew by 63.9% in 2021 compared with 2020. Recharge cars made up 27% of Volvo Cars' total sales volume in 2021.

Online car sales gain momentum

The number of Volvo vehicles sold online worldwide increased by a whopping 316% in 2021 compared with 2020. The company notes that this growth was driven by increasing customer demand combined with a broadened offer in more markets.

December was a challenging month nevertheless

Volvo Cars recorded 64 436 retail deliveries globally in December, a decline of 18.1% compared to the same month in 2020. They say the result was significantly influenced by continued supply shortages, which affected production and customer deliveries. However, demand for Volvo vehicles remained strong, according to the carmaker.

Almost 40% of all new Volvo cars sold in December were Recharge models, with fully-electric vehicles making up 7.4%. In Europe, the share of Recharge cars was almost 60%, while in the USA it was close to 30% of overall sales volumes.

USA, China and Europe love the brand

In Volvo Cars' most significant markets, such as the USA, the company sold 122 173 cars in total last year, an increase of 10.9% compared with 2020. In December, Volvo Cars sold 10 793 vehicles in the USA. Sales in China amounted to 171 676 cars, up 3% compared with 2020. In December, Volvo Cars sold 14 642 vehicles in China.

In Europe, year-to-date sales increased by 1.8% to 293 471 cars, as solid demand for Recharge cars supported the sales performance. In December, Volvo Cars sold 28 561 vehicles in Europe.

XC60 leads the way for Volvo

Globally, the XC60 continues to be the best-selling Volvo model in 2021, as the company sold 215 635 units (in 2020, it sold 191 696 units) during the year. The XC40 follows in second place with total sales of 201 037 units (2020 sales were 185 406 units), while the XC90 is the third-best-selling model with 108 231 cars finding new homes (2020 sales were 92 458 units).

Volvo Recharge in South Africa

The Volvo XC40 Recharge is already on sale in South Africa via the My Volvo online store. The vehicle was supposed to arrive in South Africa late last year. However, the aforementioned stock shortages have put the brakes on its arrival.

The XC40 Recharge is priced around R1,3 million, and it offers a "distance to empty" of about 400km on a full battery charge. Volvo Cars in South Africa is sweetening the deal for all early adopters of the XC40 Recharge by throwing in a home wall-box charging solution so that you can keep the car topped up overnight and start each day with a full charge.

Volvo Cars SA will also allow you to drop your XC40 Recharge off at a local dealer to swap it for a petrol or diesel Volvo for the first three years of ownership, just in case you might have a bit of range anxiety for those long holiday road trips.
