Toyota posted impressive numbers for the month of August, selling more than 10 000 new vehicles.
As has been the case for a long time, the Hilux bakkie leads from the front, with a total of 3 335 units finding new homes. The Hiace (1 298), Starlet (1 203) and Urban Cruiser (876) also posted healthy numbers during the same period.
Despite the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Japanese brand recorded a total of 10 543 units and a year-to-date figure of 75 323 in SA.
Leon Theron, senior vice-president of sales and marketing for TSAM, says: "The ongoing challenges in the domestic new vehicle segment are worrying, although Toyota is once again the only motor manufacturer that has successfully breached the 10 000 sales threshold in the last few years.
"Of interest though, is that Toyota has managed an average market share of 24.9% this - which is quite encouraging in the current economic climate."
Other Toyota-affiliated brands also contributed to the sales success with the Lexus' hybrid trio of the ES (11), RX (10) and UX (11). Truck division, Hino, amassed 251 units.
Out of 41 425 vehicles, more than 80% of sales came via dealerships, while the rest were split between the rental industry, corporate fleets, and government.
