Cape Town - Luxury SUVs are a booming market in South Africa and it's fast becoming a very sought after playground for luxury carmakers.

In March 2017 the Range Rover/Range Rover Sport sold 134 units, 28 more than the second-placed Toyota Land Cruiser 200 on 106.

Money talks

The Land Rover Discovery 4 found the third most new owners, with a sales figure of 103 units. The Jaguar F-Pace (95 units) ensured that three Jaguar Land Rover products are in the top four.

Another Toyota, the Prado in fifth place, took a heavy sales slump as 63 units found new homes. Porsche’s Cayenne sold 52 new units in sixth.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee came in seventh place after selling 46 new units, followed by Volvo’s 2016 Car of the Year, the XC90 (44 units) in eighth place.

The Audi Q7 (32 units) and Lexus LX (25 units) round out the top 10.

Despite South Africa’s economic outlook looking grim, this segment is booming more than any other.

It shows continuous growth despite SA’s economy. Proof of this is Bentley’s R4-million Bentayga that found two new owners and Maserati’s first-ever SUV, the Levante, sold 12 units.
