With the South African economy still reeling from the devasting effects of Covid-19 and the subsequent lockdown, the automotive sector is on a steady but stable road to recovery. May 2021 was the best sales month so far in 2021, with projections hinting that things can only get better as time goes on.

True, Covid-19 has not been kind on any of the industries making up our economy, but everyone is doing their utmost to pull through. May 2021 is a beacon of light and hope for the automotive sector, with automakers picking up the pieces and trying to resume business as per normal - whatever that 'normal' may be.

Ford South Africa, though, registered the third-highest sales figure of all automakers conducting business in South Africa last month. According to Naamsa, the automotive body council, Ford sold 2 910 new vehicles in the country, placing it in the third position after Toyota and the Volkswagen Group. While the Blue Oval can be content with the bronze medal, only three of the nine vehicles in its portfolio registered three-digit sales figures.

Ranger leads the charge

As is customary, the Ford Ranger sold the most number of vehicles for the American manufacturer. The sales figure of 1 972 not only makes it Ford SA's top-selling product, but it was also the third best-selling vehicle in the country last month. Some way off the Ranger's figure is the EcoSport on 507 units, followed by the brawny Everest on 252 units.

The Figo is the next vehicle on 48 units sold, just ahead of the über-cool Mustang sports car. The Pony car managed to put a smile on 40 customers' faces. The Tourneo Custom managed a sales figure of 38 units, ahead of the Fiesta (27 units) and Transit.

The Transit competing in the light commercial vehicle (LCV) segment sold 20 units versus the medium CV Transit on six units.
