June has come and gone, and the sales figures for the month have been tallied and confirmed. The Toyota Hilux was once again the best-selling vehicle in South Africa, selling a total of 3 320 units in June.

Volkswagen's Polo Vivo gets the wooden spoon with 1 636 models finding new homes, but if you combine it with the bigger Polo's 1 418, it equates to a total figure of 3 054 - 266 behind the Hilux.

The list also includes a number of newcomers like Toyota's Starlet (1 165 units sold), Nissan's Magnite (532) and Haval's Jolion (708) that held their own against other established competition.

South Africa might be experiencing tighter lockdown restrictions at present and amidst the financial uncertainty, but that is not stopping people from buying brand-new vehicles.

When pitting all the models against the other, the Volkswagen Group (5 263) comes out tops against Toyota and Lexus (4 333), with the German brand also exporting a total of 7 188 Polo's.

Lebogang Gaoaketse, Head of Marketing and Communication at WesBank, says: "While the majority of sales during June were not severely impacted by Covid-19 restrictions, we should expect a returned level of hesitancy during July. Both business and consumer confidence are certainly building their own momentum despite the current environment, which is providing continued energy into the slow recovery of the market."

Besides the Hilux, Ranger and Polo models, these are the best-selling models from each automaker for the month of June:
