In December last year, the Automobile Association of South Africa (AASA) released vehicle crash test results that didn't bode well for the GWM Steed 5. The vehicle in question was the entry-level Steed 5 workhorse model (without airbags or anti-lock brakes). GWM hasn't rested on its laurels since then, and 12 months later, its research and development teams have updated the bakkie to ensure it's safer than ever before.
With the launch of this latest generation Steed bakkie in South Africa, GWM says it's delighted to announce that its Steed models will now come with dual airbags and anti-lock ABS brakes as standard equipment across the range.

Refined GWM Steed line-up for SA for 2022
The GWM Steed model line-up for the 2022 model year is split as follows:
- Single Cab is available in 2.0-litre S 4x2 6MT, 2.0-litre S 4x4 6MT, 2.0-litre SX 4x4 6MT formats.
- Double Cab is available in 2.0-litre SX 4x2 6MT and 2.0-litre SX 4x4 6MT formats.
- Diesel powerplants mobilise all models.
The refreshed Steed offers a new front grille and front bumper. The bumper is colour-coded, and an outer tie-down is a welcome addition. The interior features black luxury trimmings, another welcome change compared to the look and feel of the outgoing model's interior. The S and SX grades feature the same single-DIN AM/FM radio with a USB port on the radio deck.
Here's what you get with the different grades of 2022 Steed models in SA
GWM Steed S models come with Power Steering, ABS and EBD, Outer Tie-Down Hook Rail, Remote Central Locking, Dual Front Airbags, Radio with AM/FM with USB port, Power Adjustable Mirrors, Electric Windows, Manual Aircon, and 16-inch Steel Wheels.
GWM Steed SX models come with the above spec as well as Front and Rear Fog Lamps, Rear Bumper and Rear Park Distance Sensors, Guard Rail for the Single Cab, Partial "Leather" Seats and Steering Wheel, 16-inch Alloy Wheels, Tyre Pressure Monitor, Auto Aircon (Double Cab Only) and Chrome-plated Front Grille and Door Handles.

Beefier diesel engine and no more petrol power
According to GWM, the petrol-powered Steed was discontinued for 2022 because of the diesel powerplant's performance and fuel economy gains.
"The numbers don't lie in terms of engine performance, and the increases are apparent. Engine output is increased by 5kW and 15Nm compared to the outgoing model, with the torque being delivered earlier in the rev range at 1400rpm some 400rpm lower than before, so turbo lag is significantly reduced," says GWM SA PR and Marketing Manager, Vaughan Swanepoel.
The 2022 Steed range offers 110kW at 4000rpm and 320Nm of torque between 1400rpm and 2800rpm. GWM has not provided official fuel consumption figures for the upgraded engine just yet, but we have requested a test drive of the 2022 Steed to assess the bakkie along our 100km combined cycle fuel loop in Johannesburg. The 2022 GWM Steed range is priced attractively and comes with welcome features. Considering the rising cost of some of SA's best-selling bakkies, it might be the ideal vehicle for you if you are looking for something that can work as both a business and leisure vehicle.
