Mahindra has been on a bakkie offensive the last week, showing three versions of its popular Pik Up. The Durban-built bakkie is a popular choice among South Africans, impressing with its aggressive pricing and strong features list.
It's because of this very popularity that Mahindra South Africa gave its Pik Up three makeovers, of which two are with specific purposes in mind.
All Mahindra Pik Up bakkies are sold with a four-year or 120 000km mechanical warranty and a five-year or 90 000km service plan.
Mahindra Karoo Dusk S11 Automatic
The Karoo Dusk is based on the flagship S11 Karoo model, but features a dark blue hue for the Dusk decals, 17-inch machined off-road alloys wrapped in special mud terrain tyres. Off-road bumpers have also been added for greater functionality in technical driving. The approach and departure angles have also been increased.
Both bumpers have been designed with overlanding in mind. The rear bumper doubles as a heavy-duty step and is trimmed with non-slip diamond plate. It has mounting points for a high-lift jack, extra heavy-duty recovery loops and a tow bar with flush-mounted electric connection as standard. The front-mounted off-road bumper has received special attention for this model. Aside from the aggressive profile, it has a powder-coated steel bush bar to protect the front headlamps in off-road situations.
Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa, says: "The Karoo has a special place in South African culture. It is simultaneously known for its hard and unforgiving landscape and the openness of its hard-working inhabitants. That is what inspired us with the creation of the original Pik Up Karoo. Now we are stepping it up with the S11 Karoo Dusk, which is both stunning to look at and ready for anything the road can throw at it."

Mahindra Pik Up Ambulance
Mahindra also stepped up its game to launch the all-new Pik Up Ambulance. The bakkie is based on the Pik Up S6 Single Cab and is designed and built as a go-anywhere mobility unit for first responders and medical staff. Because it comes out of Mahindra's South African facilities, it carries a full factory warranty. It's available in both 4x2 and 4x4.
Gupta says: "This widespread acceptance by businesses and the government has inspired us to investigate other applications, such as the Ambulance, which will allow companies to add the vehicle to their existing fleet easily."
Inside, Mahindra has fitted a range of medically approved equipment that is not only easy to reach and use but allows most customers to buy and use the ambulance without requiring additional customisation and certification.
The range of equipment includes an air conditioner linked to the driver cabin, a freshwater system with basin, oxygen tanks, an intercom, interior LED-lighting, a swivel rear spotlight and storage space that double up as a bench. This equipment, and the additional power points in the rear cabin, are powered from an additional battery system fitted in the engine bay.

Mahindra Pik Up Game Viewer
Based on the S4 model of Mahindra's popular bakkie, the Pik Up Game Viewer launches in South Africa with a full factory warranty. This customised vehicle is available in 4x2 and 4x4 and has a standard features list normally required by game farms and tourist operators. The Pik Up Game Viewer has a payload of 1 195kg, 210mm of ground clearance, and can seat up to ten people.
Mahindra South Africa says they're also offering a comprehensive list of modifications that will allow owners to customise the Game Viewer to their needs. Because Mahindra does everything, the warranty remains intact.
While the standard S4 Pik Up Game Viewer will meet most operators' needs, Mahindra has added a list of options for more specific applications. These applications include an extended foldaway polycarbonate windscreen that reaches the roof, a marine-ply roof cover, canvas roll downsides, additional 12V plug points inside the cabin, an optional wheel fitted on the rear of the cage, and a nudge bar.
Gupta adds: "Tourism remains a key economic driver in South Africa. We hope that with the S4 Pik Up Game Viewer, we can make the benefits of this vehicle available to more tourist destinations. We are excited about exploring other vehicle applications of the trusty Pik Up that can fill a similar niche in other economic sectors."
