Great Wall Motors (GWM) launched its new P-Series in South Africa. The launch program, consisting of several activities, was aimed at highlighting many of the bakkie's traits, and it managed to do just that. The P-Series is GWM's attempt at stealing some of the pie Toyota's Hilux and Ford's Ranger so blatantly enjoys in South Africa. The bakkie will speak to an audience who is not by the financial means to splurge on one of the market leaders, but want to have all the bells and whistles in a top-of-the-range model.

The P-Series is available in both Commercial and Passenger configurations, with only the Commercial range offering a single cab derivative. All the bakkies in the P-Series line-up are powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre diesel engine that produces 120kW/400Nm, and is fitted with either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission.

On the road, the P-Series' ride quality is commendable and offers fairly good comfort for occupants. On gravel, though, rear occupants will feel slightly more uncomfortable - given the bakkie's jittery rear. This should, theoretically, improve when the loading bay is laden. In off-road conditions, the P-Series is a bakkie of another nature. Though the off-road system is not as refined and impeccable as Mitsubishi's SuperSelect II, it is still easy enough to operate.

The system requires minimal input for everything to be engaged and activated, which should see P-Series owners feeling like pros as they navigate over and through obstacles at their favourite off-road spot. The engine does require a fair amount of throttle input to get the small capacity up and running, but the drivetrain proved itself with aplomb at the launch earlier in December.

GWM priced its P-Series from R339 900 for the SX 4x2 6MT single cab to R544 900 for the LT 4x4 8AT double cab.
