In the late 2000s, buyers could choose compact bakkies from Ford, Fiat, Opel and Nissan. Of those four rivals, only Nissan remains in the market, with its NP200.

Although it never sold in large numbers, Fiat's Strada was a highly regarded compact bakkie in the local market. It has a distinctive Italian exterior design, without sacrificing its capabilities as a small utility vehicle.

Fiat no longer has a significant presence in the South African bakkie market, and with the launch of its local double-cab bakkie, that is a pity.
