Ford Motor Company in the USA has spared no expense turning its new 2022 Expedition large sports utility vehicle (SUV) into a go-anywhere, do-anything bundu basher that's precisely the kind of Ford product we'd love to have access to in South Africa. Unfortunately, the Expedition is a no-go for Mzansi as it's only built in left-hand drive for the North American market and particular countries worldwide.

While it's disappointing that we can't buy the Expedition here, that doesn't stop us from salivating at this latest version that's kitted out with bespoke gear that's been supplied by some of the juiciest names in off-roading.

Called Expedition Timberline Off-Grid concept, it is essentially a standard vehicle that's been appointed with proven names in off-road hardware and off-road accessories to help adventurers confidently trek to hard-to-reach mountainside sojourns, remote farms and distant deserts.

"The Expedition Timberline Off-Grid concept provides a futuristic view of how family adventurers can potentially get even more out of an Expedition Timberline, including the absolute best mobile basecamp," says Robert Varto, program manager of the concept for Ford.

According to Ford, the Expedition Timberline Off-Grid concept is focused on multi-day off-roading functionality and ease of use. You'll immediately notice the vehicle's towering stance, custom-made DeeZee Rock Rail Hoop Steps and its CG Detroit custom body wrap over Forged Green exterior paint.

While the 2022 Ford Expedition offers the best ground clearance in its class at 270mm, this concept adds another 50mm of ride height, and it's sitting on custom Fox Performance Elite Series 2.5-inch shocks with Dual Speed Compression adjusters and remote reservoirs front and rear. The SUV also rides on unique 17-inch Method Race Wheels with Bead Grip technology wrapped with 35-inch General Grabber all-terrain tyres.

Ready to go anywhere

To guarantee the best mobile campsite for explorers while keeping things realistic with aftermarket accessories that Expedition owners can purchase through its dealer network and partners, the Expedition Timberline Off-Grid concept leverages what Ford calls the Outfitter collection.

These include a Thule Tepui Explorer tent with crossbars attached to its roof rails, a factory-available transmission shield, Overland Vehicle Systems' Nomadic 180-degree awning that quickly pulls out to help protect adventurers from the elements, and a Wild Land portable privacy room shower.

A 127cm Rigid light bar is mounted above the windshield with an additional Rigid 51cm light bar below the grille to brighten up your campsites at night, while compact side shooter cube lights are installed on top of the bonnet.

Rigid spotlights mounted within the wheel wells and liftgate further illuminate those areas to ensure you aren't left in the dark when the sun sets.

The interior of the Expedition Timberline Off-Grid concept is extraordinary. It's fitted with an EZ STAK custom aluminium dual storage drawer unit that sits under a custom Luno camping mattress with enough room for two.

To make sleeping in the concept vehicle even more comfortable, Luno also provides a concept-specific Base Extender, window shades and portable USB fan.

A Clarion battery specifically designed for vehicles supporting heavy-duty projects is fitted to ensure this concept vehicle can handle the electric loads needed at off-grid campsites.

With a Turtleback Expedition Series Trailer, the largest trailer in the Turtleback lineup, the capability of the Expedition Timberline concept vehicle swells further. The trailer matches the Expedition Timberline Off-Grid concept using the same wheels and General Grabber all-terrain tyres.

The manufacturer says the trailer's designed to hold additional gear for an extended cross-country trip, including a two-burner gas stove and deep-well sink, a pair of drop-down tables, a 191-litre water tank and 27-litre water heater with external shower hookup, and a pancake gas tank.

You can even fit a fridge and a 100-watt solar panel to the trailer for those long road trips. The Expedition Timberline Off-Grid concept vehicle will be one of the stars of Ford's stand at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas in November.
